I know this isn't related to the Ranger but many of us may know someone with one of these trucks.

Here's the link to the recall notice. By the way it's 40 pages long...

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2021/MC-10189752-0001.pdf

NEW VEHICLE DEMONSTRATION / DELIVERY HOLD Customer Satisfaction Program 21B03 -
Supplement #1 Certain 2020 Model Year Super Duty F250-F600 Vehicles Equipped with a 10R140 Transmission - Number One Planetary and Ring Gear Assembly.

AFFECTED VEHICLES : Super Duty F250-F600 2020
Build Dates: Kentucky Truck 28-Feb-2019 through 10-Aug-2020
Build Dates: Ohio Assembly 03-Apr-2019 through 31-Jul-2020

REASON FOR THIS PROGRAM In all of the affected vehicles, a distressed No. 1 planetary needle bearing inside the ring gear assembly will generate contamination that may produce rough shifts. A wrench light is likely to come on, and the transmission may go into safe mode and only operate in seventh gear. As damage progresses, the transmission may only be capable of limited vehicle speed or may not engage in forward or reverse.

They have to pull the transmission on nearly every 2020 F250-F600 with the 10R140 transmission tear it down to replace the No. 1 planetary and ring gear assembly. This includes unsold trucks sitting on the lots as well. Book time is listed for the repair is between 9 - 10.2 HOURS PER TRUCK. Hopefully the dealers have skilled transmission techs on staff cause looking at the repair, it's not an easy job.

The bonus line in the document:

New! OWNER NOTIFICATION MAILING SCHEDULE
Parts to repair this condition are currently not available in sufficient quantities to service all of the affected vehicles. Therefore, to ensure an ample supply of parts are available, VINs will be activated as part supply allows and owners of affected vehicles will be notified in separate mailings. Mailing will begin the week of March 22, 2021, prioritized by emergency vehicles and wrecker vehicles. Mailing for Supplement #1 vehicles will begin the week of April 12, 2021. Bulletin supplements will be published to notify dealers of any changes to the vehicle population. Dealers should repair any affected vehicles that arrive at their dealerships, whether or not the customer has received a letter.

Lol.. yeah I saw that part. Imagine taking your brand new truck in for an oil change and they tell you they need to basically rebuild the transmission and it will take a few days to complete provided they actually have the parts in stock to do it.

Yep. I’ve bitched about Ford quality on an F150 forum I was a member of. And I always got the brand cultists to come out of the woodwork and defend them.

I’m obviously a Ford guy too, but their quality has been dropping over the years. A few months ago there was a study and it showed Ford paid out way more for warranty claims than Dodge and GM. An actual analysis proved that to be the case.

What a clusterfuck.

Also, I get that Ford innovates more than the other truck manufacturers, but you have to wonder if they actually test their products before putting them out to the public. The last few years have been an absolute train wreck for Ford.

The roll out of the Explorer comes to mind.

This happened to me back in '96 when Ford changed over their body style from the old square farmer version to the newer rounded one. I went in for an oil change and they told me there was a recall on the tranny and they'd need a day or two to complete the work. I don't remember what it was or how many it affected but it was a PITA because I use mine for work so I had to empty the whole truck out and made them give me another truck as a loaner. This is just what they need with all these trucks built and sitting in the midst of a chip shortage.

This is one of those times where it would be better for Ford to have entire transmissions sent to the dealers and swap them as the trucks come in. I wonder the legality of giving a customer a rebuilt transmission under warranty, it's probably not allowed. Too bad though, it has to be faster to drop a tranny and throw in a new one than rebuild the stupid thing.

shit happens right?
sucks for Ford, sucks for anyone affected by it.

but it is what it is

Curious how it became a " a distressed No. 1 planetary needle bearing "

improper assembly? improper design???
Probably a bad batch of steel.

you would need to read thru the warranty - some warranties have language that allows for the use of refurbished components. I know Hyundai/KIA has this as they are having to replace several hundred k Theta II engines and often use refurb blocks.

Of course it would be faster to just replace the entire transmission. It would cost Ford a lot more money. This way they just ship a bag of parts per vehicle. This way they only have to make a bag of parts per vehicle. I'm sure the Ford legal department has seen this scenario in the past. I'd expect them to reflect some compensation in an extended warranty for the trany.

Good reading. Stuff like this honestly gets me reconsidering buying another Ford. At least with its current leadership.

I talk crap about Toyota, but maybe I’ll wait and see the GM Colorado redesign and the Tundra reveal before trading.

Honestly, it’s bad enough that most likely ALL 2020 F-Superduties with this transmission are or could be lemons with a defective part…….it’s how Ford remedies the problem. Not even offering a fluid and filter change. Really? Their transmission should be replaced - I wholeheartedly agree with the guys on the forum.

Ford is going to need a bailout in a few years if these issues keep popping up. It’s like they have hired ex General Motors middle and upper management from the early 2000’s lol.

I just search for this and haven't seen anything in the news, nor have I seen an estimate for the number of vehicles impacted. It's worth noting that it isn't the only transmission available on the trucks, it may be a pretty small number overall.

Only for the thinned skin types who take offense at things as often as when the wind changes directions.

From what I can find the 2020 Super Duty line only came with the 10R140 transmission.
