On my drive home this morning I had my defroster on set at 67 degrees and low fan speed due to rain and the windows kept fogging up. Half way home I noticed a crack in the lower left side of my windshield that went from the driver's side all the way to the passenger side. Stopped at my local Ford dealer to submit a warranty claim. Waiting to hear back from the dealer. Has this happened to anyone else? My truck is just over 6 months old and has 14,280 miles on it.

My bet is there was a small stone chip on the edge of the glass that "grew". It happens a lot in Michigan, especially in the winter time when the temperature differential is higher.

Yes, this seems fairly common. There are other threads here discussing the same issue. The dealer will likely run a ball-point pen along the crack. If there is a chip or impact point, the pen will reveal it and they will probably not warranty it.

The dealer did the ball point pen along the crack and found no chips or impact points along the whole length of the crack. I did have my Go Pro recording from when I left work this morning. You can see the crack starting just below the black area of the windshield and the inner edge of where the defroster vent ends on the driver's side of the dash. I did tell my service adviser that we could watch the hour and 45 min Go Pro video to see where it started cracking from, he politely declined, lol.

Out here in the wide open spaces ... they do chip seal ... a nasty process designed to crack windshields. My policy includes "premium" glass coverage that give me chip repair or new windshield if I'm not satisfied with the repair ... $0 deductible. I pay for it through the premium, but, it's worth it. I average a windshield every 18 months.

Good luck with the dealer.

Ford denied my warranty claim. Windshields Are only covered for 12,000 and I have exactly 14,287 miles on it.
Hopefully you have glass coverage on your insurance to take care of it. I always make sure I have this and it also covers me for rentals too.

We were coming back from CO a couple years ago in a rental and a huge rock came off the truck ahead and hit the top corner of the windshield. It just about shattered the whole windshield but I was covered by my auto. Good thing because I had a Discover card and rented with that because they always covered auto. Little did I know in their new Terms of Service (who reads this?) they stopped this benefit 18 months prior.

That looks exactly like the one on my truck. It was covered by warranty but there were strict overviews and such. If you ask me there was a funky batch of glass that had a imperfection in the mold.
But anyway what was there reason for denying there claim besides the mileage. And where in the world is that in writing.
Hope this comes out with the least amount of pain for you :like:

This type of glass is not molded per say. It starts flat laminated sheets and then is placed on a form. That’s on a conveyor that goes into a long oven. The glass get cherry red and droops over the form. Then it cools as it exits the oven in stages. Pretty cool process to watch
