Is it normal to only have parking sensors in the rear?

That's interesting. Because I too have an XLT 302a and have the front sensors. But as @slowmachine pointed out, the website says only the Lariat gets it. I've also gone through the website and find the forward sensors can apparently only be added as part of the technology package now on XLT, which I don't have. Must've been an under the table change they made for 2020.

So to summarize: yes, it's possible to have just rears and not fronts. The front sensors come as a part of a higher end package. The rear sensors come with a much lower package.

I have a difficult time believing Ford put profits over safety.
The front parking sensors aren't so much about safety, at least in my mind, they're more about convenience. And it's not like they got rid of the sensors, they just moved them from the XLT 302a package and above, slightly up the chain to the XLT Tech package and above. Honestly probably more of a manufacturability change by grouping certain things together than anything else.

Exactly what I was thinking of when I responded.

Before all the news reports of the exploding pintos came out, my cousin had purchased one. He gave me a ridein it. Felt like my butt was 6 inches off the asphalt. I think it was worse than the AMC Pacer. They must give the design requirements to a mechanical engineer fresh out of college.

"Here, design a car, we'll see how you do"

Job applicant submits his design and somebody in Ford, or any other manufacturer, for that matter, says, "that'll do" and puts it in production.

Yeah, 2019 XLT here, no Tech package, but do have the 302a. Have front sensors and I'll never buy a truck without them again, they are super handy!

Nice truck! To answer your question in regard to Rear Sensors....

Yes, if you have an XLT or Lariat, rear sensors are standard equipment.

It is optional on a XL.

It was a great car for the time. Look at how many they sold, it's the car people wanted at the time.

It has nothing to do with a young engineer. It's all about accepted safety requirements and mass producing a vehicle economically.

And for the record, 1960's Mustang's had the same type of gas tank arrangement, where the top of the fuel tank was actually the floor of the car. So if you had a Mustang Fastback and the gas tank ruptured, the fuel went into the vehicle.

But GM and Ford both had pickup trucks where the gas tank was inside the truck's cab.

I am old enough to remember when Ford intro'd the Pinto and Chevy the Vega with much hoopla and made the bold statement they would drive imports from america's shores and in reality they probably did just the opposite. Which was worse - the Pinto or the Vega ? A friend had a Vega in the rust belt and the a pillars were rusted out after 2 winters.
