I say attempted because I never did get the filter off so I ended up just draining the oil and put in new oil. I got access to the oil filter just fine by taking off the trim piece you all posted about. But that filter was royal b!@#$ and I couldn't break it loose. I even went to the local auto parts place and got one of those rachet style filter getter offer things that goes on the end of the filter. I tested for fitment while at the auto parts store to make sure I got the right size matched to a FL910S filter. Brought it home put it on the factory filter and it just spun/too big (wtf). Long story shortened up a bit is the factory filter is different size than the replacement FL910S (why is this?). I tried repeatedly and it fit the 910S nice and snug but was too big for the factory installed filter??? So after much profanity and I didn't have channel locks big enough I decided to call it a day and buttoned it back up. I will have to be content with a job half done. I've ready many posts on here about how easy it is to get this filter off and that they're only on hand tight...…..BS! Or i'm the unluckiest bastard in the world.

To the dealer it goes for the next one.

Some people have reported the factory filter is on REALLY tight. I didn't have that problem, but it seems to be rather intermittent. Sounds like you were one of the unlucky ones.

Something that was reported here a while ago was to add some rubber or something in the cap for the filter to make it grab.

Good luck when you try again!

Factory filters are notoriously tight. Channel locks...strap wrench...strap type filter wrench...lots of ways to skin this cat. Don't get discouraged. You still can (and probably should) change the filter soon. You can do this with minimal oil loss.

I did my first oil change a week ago. Like you, my factory-installed filter was on really really tight. I absolutely could not get it to budge by hand. Making matters worse, although it is relatively easy access the filter with a hand, I found it to be quite difficult to use a "filter getter offer thing" on it. Like you, I kept having slippage issues, even though I definitely had the right size of getter offer (and I can confirm that the filter I took off was identical to the one I put on). It's just an awkward space for using the filter wrench in. I ended up getting it loose by putting the filter wrench in through the wheel well to get it in approximately right spot, then reaching down from the top of the engine compartment and working by feel (while getting feedback from my 6-YO daughter who was watching through the wheel well) to slowly work the filter loose.

Hi Daniel,

I feared what you experienced with my cup removal tool. I noticed the cup marginally grabbed the filter unlike the replacement 910S filters. So I took a rubber dead blow mallet and seated the cup. Now I could not get the 3/8" drive to seat as it was up against the filter. So stuck the end of my drive into the cup and pushing against the cup, I cranked the ratchet and the filter rotated to the point I could remove it....However I had a problem in how to get the cap off the old filter. Ended up putting the old filter in a vice and using a cold chisel, banging the cup off the old filter.

New filter is installed hand tight with a ÂĽ turn, making sure the rubber sealing ring is well lubed.

Mine was on very tight I have the old clamp style filter wrench, but instead of a handle, it has a square hole for a 3/8 drive ratchet. I could easily reach in with two long extensions and got it loose.

Yeah, the 3 jaw wrench is a life saver for that filter location. That with a wobble extension and a 12" extension is money. Made it SO much easier for me to do the oil change the second time. Lol

What i usually do in that situ, is drive a long, thin flat bladed screw driver into the side of the filter, and pry start it. A bit messy, but works.
I've done that on occasion with filters that don't want to come off.

The other thing I've done is draped a large patch of that rubberized shelving grip material over the filter then put my filter wrench over it. Super grip and it has no choice but to turn. It looks like this:

Great for opening jars and caps too.

Hi Folks,

I agree with Zaph, I use a segment of this shelving to plant my diamond hones on my workbench to home my wood chisels and other cutting tools and my wife and my kitchen knifes. Works like the hones were glued to the work bench. I devised many much more complicated clamping devices... This is a very simple and elegant solution....been using this for years to get a razor sharp edge on my cutting tools and knives.

Never considered for an oil filter but I have many feet of this to use if necessary.

Got the factory filter off by hand on Saturday when I did the 1st 1K mile oil change. It was a a little tight but nothing my big ole' gloved gorilla biscuits couldn't handle.

Spent more time fighting those stupid body clips to get the rubber flap out of the way than getting the old filter out.

I'll definitely be stocking up on those stupid things...
