So a few times since I bought my '19 crew cab xlt ranger (saber) I'll be driving along, and like I usually do, will put my left arm on the door and drive with one hand (left hand). I'm sure I'm not the only one that has gotten the "please place hands on the steering wheel" message in the information center. So normally I'll comply, especially since data sharing is enabled and who knows who can do what with that little bit of information in the event there's a wreck or some other unfortunate incident.

Okay you say, what's impressive about that?

Well, that's not really the impressive part. The same scenario happened today, getting the "please keep hands on the steering wheel" message. As I normally do, I complied. The impressive part came a few minutes later, when a message came out of the blue and totally unexpected. I get this flashing light in the information center and a message pops up saying...are you ready for this?

"Please stop farting in here!"

That's the impressive part. I wonder what big brother can do with that?

Listen to the truck... I happened to have both hands off the wheel for a split second right when the road lines split from one lane into two, and the truck attempted a 90 degree right turn at highway speed. My guess is it's correcting you into the lane with an amount of force that expects there to be two hands on the wheel, when there isn't it WAY OVER CORRECTS.

I think my truck likes the farting though as I've never heard it complain.

You can turn it off, for now...
So let's say you have the technology... and you turn it off.... and then have an accident.

Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

As someone who's been sued for an at fault accident, it doesn't matter what you're doing, you're going to get sued as soon as Sam Bernstein hears about what happened. No amount of technology will be the tipping point between "I'm suing" and "Naa, accidents happen".

Leave it off. If you can't stay in your lane, you shouldn't be driving anyways.

Sure, I understand your point and agree. I guess I should have explained my point better.

You've got the lane departure and collision avoidance turned off.

Let's say you're driving down the road and get distracted, like looking down to plug a thumb drive into the USB port.

Your truck drifts into oncoming traffic. You run a motorcycle off the road, killing two people.

Now not only did you kill two people because you weren't paying attention... but the truck settings could be reviewed and therefore shown that you intentionally turned off the equipment on your vehicle that could have avoided the accident.

Seems like the judge and the jury of your peers would think that shows negligence and prior planning? Perhaps the "prior planning" takes it from mere homicide to murder?

I don't know... but it seems like an avenue a lawyer would pursue?

Intent is what changes it from m manslaughter to murder.

In this case it would be the difference between 2nd degree murder and involuntary manslaughter.

State would have prove that he intended to cause an accident and the lead up wouldn't prove that.

There's also no legal requirements to use any of the equipment.

Yet.....

And if you don't have the technology (XL vs XLT / Lariat) it's not an issue either way.
