There is a known issue where they swell and the outer part separates from the other. Prevalent in snow and ice areas. My last five Fords they were replaced quickly with solid lug nuts.
Are these different?

Unless these have changed over the years every F150 I owned had the stock lugs. Living back in MA I traveled through NH, ME and Canada snowmobiling I've never had any problems with the stock Ford lugs.

Now when I buy wheel locks I only buy Gorilla or McGuard so if you're looking for a good lug I'd go with one of these if not OEM.

I consider lugs nuts a wear item that need to be replaced every X years. I use the factory nuts year round on the Ranger, and when the time comes I'll buy some replacements.

My F150 had the same 2 piece acorn nuts, which eventually separated and I replaced with capless 1 piece traditional style nuts which last much longer. They are more prone to rusting. The studs tips are exposed and show rust as well, so I may go to black coated nuts when Ranger's nuts start to separate.

Someone here suggested these rims when i asked "need low cost steel tims for winter" and I'd guess these were made for the lowest dollar rangers. Nonetheless, the original nuts were used on them but my tire shop said when they put them on last fall "I'd get different nuts for winter use, those orginial ones don't do well in salt". Hence I'm looking for steel, lower cost not fancy types.

Ford has used those shitty 2 part lugs for decades.

Dave, IIRC you traded out of your F-150s pretty quick, right? Likely the second owner had to deal with them.

I usually kept them for 3 years then traded them in. You'd figure with all the salt and junk from where I lived and all the areas we snowmobiled I would've had some issues over the years. Maybe they're just worse now like everything else? Luckily that's the least of my worries here. ?

Yep, second owner probably has to deal with them.

They'll literally fall apart after enough freeze/thaw cycles. Seems like most of them I hear about failing are about 5 years in.

Like you said though, nothing to worry about down there.

What really kills the 2 piece designed nuts fast is impact tools. It thins out the outer jacket and then they split or crack allowing moisture to penetrate and the rust finishes them off.

Gotcha. The failed ones that I have seen had obvious moisture intrusion and corrosion. Didn't put 2 and 2 together on the impact usage but that makes sense.

Only and an issue once on my 2001 Escape. Dealer told me I had a bad lug nut, $5.00, I said you guys have been doing the tire rotations, how do I have a bad lug nut? They replaced free of charge. After that experience every new Ford I bought I swapped out the oem’s and replaced with gorilla.

btw, I live in the Sunday River area.

That's a great area and I really love ME. I just wish it wasn't so cold there. lol We use to snowmobile at either Moosehead Lake or up at Eagle Lake. We'd rent a house on Eagle Lake every February and about 12 of us would stay there for a week. The ITS trails are some of the best I've ever been on.
