i mentioned this before i think, but i wonder if someone with skills could fab up sort of a shield of sorts for the alternator? allow it to breathe and have room but block as much mud and slop as possible. maybe something tacked on to the front skid plate... like a cut water or divert er.

Having been on most of those trails over the years I'd say he had a good trip overall. Those water holes tend to have lots of suspended grit floating in them and thus eat alternators for lunch. We would be better served with a top mount alternator for that kind of wheeling.

The problem is the rate of entry. Rushing into water causes water/grit to slam into the alternator increasing penetration.

Crawl into the water at a reasonable pace until submerged, then slowly accelerate and water/grit flow around instead of being pushed into.
