I am getting ready to wire my truck up for a portable winch setup that can be used in front or rear reciever.
My question is what is the recommended cable?
I have found both welding wire and battery cable in 1/0. Which would you choose and why please? The cost difference is near the same not enough to sway either way.
Thanks guys for your input.

Do you know the amp draw for your winch?

Plus post pics, I'm interested in doing a portable winch.

350 max @12k pull, that info is printed on the box. It's a harbor freight zxr 12000 badlands winch. I do know Anderson connectors and thanks to your question I see I need to select a higher amp connector than I perviously had.

This is the only Pic I have right now. Will take pics after wiring install.
Man, am I envious, that's a powerful setup! =)

Do you have a front receiver installed?

I know a member here was selling high-spec kits that you could have welded up. And I think a few places make them commercially, like for small snowplows.

It looks like those Anderson connectors are the way to go and I saw a few places online that sell 0/1 gauge wires with Andersons installed.

I guess the dream would be to have permanent wiring to the front and to the back with Andersons with covers.

On my old FJ40 with PTO Ramsey winch, I had always wanted to run a tow cable underneath, via rollers, to the back. Not an uncommon practice way back in the day.

Here's a place with 24 foot 2 gauge wiring: https://www.589fab.com/products/qui...589185&pr_ref_pid=650610671681&pr_seq=uniform

This is my set up. I use these super long jumper cables to power the winch when in use. Its a set that has worked for me so far. I attach it to my rear receiver, usually to bring cars up on trailers and stuff. Over summer hope to have a more permanent solution installed where it is just plug and play.

I have the receiver kit that heavy duty was selling but haven't had it welded up yet.
And thanks for the link but thats only 2ga and I've been looking at specs and the minimum I can run would be 1/0 may even go to 2/0 I've chosen the Anderson sb350 amp connectors

No, they dont heat up spark or anththing. If i use it for 5 minutes thats a long time. When used, i dont use it for that long. The longest time i used them for was to pull a small utility trailer on top of a bigger utility trailer. I have not done recovery, ropes and straps for that, but just for moving heavy thing usually on top of a trailer.
For my needs and uses, this has worked okay. The only hassle is having to open the hood and attach all the jumper cables to battery and winch.

According to those charts they don't make a wire big enough to handle the amps. And that's not correct. 2 ga battery cables deliver as much as 350 amps when cranking

For what it's worth, I have a Warn 10k VR Evo winch and have Rough Country 24' 2 gauge cables that I use. Granted I haven't done any really, really serious pulling with it, but it hasn't been an issue for me.

I have the normal rear receiver mount and also got the @HeavyDuty front mount. I've pulled from both mounts with no issues.

After a lot of research, I finally ordered everything for the wiring. Found the best deal on 1/0 ofc copper wire @spartanpower, found the best deal on Anderson sb175 connectors and ring teminals @powerwerx. All in almost $350.00 that's just for the wiring. Was thinking about the rough country option but just not sure 2ga would make me feel comfortable. Then I read a review on Amazon that it wasn't pure copper it was CCA. I knew I didn't want that. So got the good stuff.

Thanks to all who replied and helped.
