I looked way back in the threads and it seems no one has added a post about lumber racks.
If you have one post it up.
"EDIT" Added pictures of a Rack-It brand lumber rack. The rack is rated to carry 1700# but the truck bed may not be able to handle that kind of weight.
They make aluminum versions and make them to fit around shells too.
This basic rack cost me $730 here in California installed.

I get the sense that many, if not most, of the participants on this forum own their trucks for sport, utility, etc rather than for work trucks.

Side note to that, I saw the first vinyl logoed ranger work truck (construction co I think?) Iā€™ve seen the other day.

I think this is one area where ford dropped the ball on the new ranger. They should have at least included stake pockets in the corners of the bed. That would have made things so much easier for people who need some kind of rack!

Easier, sure, but if they had designed stake pockets that would have required a redesign of the entire bed rail. Stake pockets "point load" the bed rail.

The racks shown above have angle iron that helps to distribute the load along a portion of the bed rail. It's a much better attachment method from a structural support perspective.

Thanks to J_D for the tip about Rack-It; I see they have dealers around Puget Sound.

Questions for HenryMac: Is the extension physically connected or just aligned with the main assembly with mending plates? What is the vocabulary word for the u-shaped reinforcement plates?

Edit: the photo looks like plywood u plates, I was thinking they were steel.

I wanted a rack for the occasional haul but didn't want something hard to remove so I copied my old trucks Weather Guard WEEKENDER rack and made it out of aluminum.
