My cottage workshop is being constructed around some ‘30s vintage tools that I’ve refurbed (function over aesthsetics).

Wow, that’s some beautiful equipment. In many ways I prefer the older methods and tools.

Until I retired, sold my shop, and then moved into a motorhome, I built tables and turned bowls. My most rewarding work was turning urns for customer's pets. Here's some of the stuff I did.

Made this jewelry box for my wife, all from the scrap bin. Cherry, birds eye maple, walnut, pauduk, and tiger maple for the dividers. I used felt flocking on the inside. After I glued up the top, even pieces on one end and odd lengths at the other, I decided to use that scrap to mortise in the handle.

Been working on a statue carving for the wife for Christmas. I bought a book years ago about humpback whales and how the mommas push their newborn calf to the surface for its first breath. It had some whale sketches in it that I enlarged drastically and printed out to make a rough template of the body outlines. Bought a very large piece of prime Honduran Mahogany, straight grain and no defects.

Years ago I found a piece of cedar driftwood on the Bank of Dale Hollow lake and knew it was made for this statue. On the one Pic of the drift wood I circled the limb I carved to fit a hole I drilled in mama, the other circle I sanded flat and will attach her with a small head trim screw. The other hole will be epoxied in. The hole in mama's nose is for a 5/16" dowel that I will also have in the calf, both glued in. Just bought a gorgeous slice of Maple burl with live edge that I will screw the driftwood to from below plus some glue. It hasn't even shipped yet, just bought it on Ebay. I bought a small metal name plate on Etsy with "First Breath" engraved on it to mount on the base. Stained and Lacquered both whales today and they are good to go for assembly once I finish the base. Those fins and tails are very fragile. Broke one of each and had to repair them.

Well she's finally finished, tried a new finish and the sheen was off so I had to strip the whales , resand, dye and finish. Then even though I counter balanced the middle pedestal by drilling a big hole in the bottom and adding lead weight, it was still a bit unsteady when I put the whales on it so I drilled 3 big holes in the base and epoxied more weight in the holes and added a peel and stick cork bottom to cover them up. Then my 5 minute epoxy was taking an hour to set so I added thick super glue and shot it with the accelerator and it's set.
NO idea how I am gonna wrap this thing!

P.S. ignore my dirty shop!
