So......I was out in the garage tinkering with some stuff on my work bench today. Out of the blue, some electric/mechanical device under the hood cycles. I have heard this many times before. I hear it every time I open the door when I have the FOB in my pocket.

Thinking the FOB and the vehicle are communicating unnecessarily with each other when I was near the vehicle (and always when opening the door) I quit carrying the FOB. It is in the house hanging on a hook in the mud room, 20ft away from the Ranger.

Anyone have any idea what this electro/mechanical "thing" is, what makes it cycle & why? You may have to go out and to your Ranger (doors unlocked) & grab your door handle. You'll probably hear it too.

Sounds like you're hearing the fuel pump priming. It does this often and the first time I heard it I thought my Ranger was possessed! Come to find out it's perfectly normal.:whew:

Why would it do it just sitting there? I haven't touched the Ranger for 3-4 days nor did I today.

IDK but it does. There will be several days I won't drive mine either and it'll go in the garage and it's going off.

Thats crazy. No wonder the battery is dead after sitting for a few weeks.

I get a faint ching ching klicky klicky klicky that sounds like a clock being wound. It's the fuel pump. If I just rant the truck it's barely noticeable. If it's been sitting for a week ten it's louder and longer.

That's why I hook it to a battery maintainer. There's always something going on and drawing power it doesn't take long to drop the voltage if you're letting it sit like I do at times.

I installed a maintainer as well after the first time the battery went dead.

The Ranger was delivered to me Sept 6th, and I've managed to put 35 mile on it since then. I'd like to drive it, but there is almost always salt & slush on the roads these days. Can't wait for spring!!

Yeah but your spring doesn't start until June up there. lol We were up that way this past June (stayed in Custer for a week) and it's really really nice there! We went up to Deadwood and came back down through Spearfish Canyon, what a nice ride that was. I told Annie I would move there tomorrow if it wasn't so darn cold and snowy there. I gave all that up when I moved from MA to AZ 8 years ago. We'll be heading back there in mid June and staying in Hill City for 2 weeks.

Salt and slush is the name of the game here. Magnetic becomes salty white. Do take it through the car wash to rinse that off as I can't wash in these temps at home.

I was raised here, moved to CA when I was 30, spent 27 years there until I could retire, tried living in KY for two year then decided to move "back home" in 2017.

The more years that pass, the better becoming a snowbird is looking.

Really the only part of living here that I absolutely hate is the salt & the hail! You just can't have nice stuff. The cold & snow isn't all that bad.

The folks that own the car washes around here make bank in the winter. We are lucky enough to have a couple of brushless drive-thrus that can stay open until it hits 10°. They have undercarriage spray bars. There is a new one under construction that I suspect will be open all the time by the looks of it.

Only noise I ever hear at random times is from the electronic actuator on the turbo. If you are at the passenger front wheel well you can see the actuator arm move if you happen to be there at the right time.
