UPDATE:

So Ford called me today and informed me that they will be rebuilding the transmission. That's pretty much all the information I have as it hasn't been torn apart yet.

Should I push for a new trans or allow them to rebuild it?
in a way that is good news. rebuild or new you are getting it fixed and starting fresh.

The first time I experienced 1st to 2nd hanging and violent slam...I came a to a complete stop and it was stuck in 7th! Eventually, it went to first...things just progressively got worse from there...I'm assuming you're under warranty so have it look it ASAP...mine was way over at 95K so I had little choice but hope it'd fix itself...it will not fix itself...
If you KNOW that the mechanic is outstanding at rebuilding transmissions let them do their thing. But if you have ANY doubts push for the new transmission. The last thing you need is a failing trannie 10K-20K miles from now.
Another update regarding this, Ford did not accept my request for a new transmission. They only approved a rebuild. It's still at the dealer, not sure when I'll get it back.

Now you know why Ford Service ratings are in the toilet

The amount of money Ford is losing on fixing and replacing these must be ridiculous. The fact that they keep doing this instead of just fixing the transmission itself before they sell it means that it must be a design flaw that would cost more money to fix than just getting to these repairs as they pop up. They may be holding off until ICE is gone hoping to save the money and development time needed to fix this thing from the ground up or come up with a whole new design.

i may be over simplifying this but i think the trucks leaving low on transmission fluid is the main reason. Some folks have no issues and id bet they left the factory with the correct amount of transmission fluid. Mine shifted ok when it was brand new then the more i drive id get annoyed with it being off in la la land of 8-10th gear when i needed 1-5. so i did the ford perf pack and it fixed about 85 % of that so i kept on rolling. then it started to degrade and be more and more issues. in my lil mind that says lack of fluid doing slow damage from heat etc. if you run low a quart or two low on oil its not instant problem. its a slow build up to big problem.
mix that with the not supposed to check the fluid level from some dealers and the 150K service mark and really fun to get to dipstick ... poof.

So, I just turned 1000 miles since my last tune revision where I worked with Torrie at Unleashed more on the shifting (This is the latest revision that many of you are trying I believe. Basically normal mode has tow mode shift points and sport mode firmness and quickness without the excessive engine braking of the two. The sport mode firmness/quickness are across the board with all modes as well.). I have been very dilligent with how I drive during that time to try to overcome Ford's adaptive strategy of picking the worst of our driving habits to base its shift strategy on instead of the best. I ran it with traction control/advance trac off as this seems to make a difference and I locked out any gears I did not need in given situations to force it to learn my way.

I can report that for two weeks now, with weather patterns ranging from 70 degree days to 30's and snowing, that I have not had any abnormal cold/first shifts in any gears, especially the ones that cause people the most trouble (3-4 and 4-5). This with varying warm up times from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. Shifting up and down in all situations have been perfect.

I am not sure if this is something that actually worked or not, but in my experience my process helped. It may have worked with me just driving normally and it is all attributed to the tune revision I worked on with Torrie. I just thought, for experimentation's sake, that I would try to do things differently to get the adaptive algorithm to follow my lead for once.

Fingers crossed. Worked hard on this...

Just wanted to hop on here and throw an update out there; for those that may be wondering about the reliability with rebuilds on the 10r80. Its been about a year and a half since the rebuild, I have had zero issues with it. My dealer did emphasize the rarity of these needing a rebuild, which I don’t know is a good thing or bad considering mine needed it and the techs don’t have a ton of experience. So far so good, though, I doubt I’ll ever learn to not buy the first year of a refresh either lol. Good luck out there guys!
