Ok Mathematicians...

How many miles do you have to go and how much gas are you having to buy in order to,

A) To pay for itself and B) How long before you start saving you money?

Thinkin' it is gonna take a while. If you are going with the "Looks Cool" feature then I understand as it is just like every other mod we've all done.

Let's say it gives you a 2% increase in fuel mileage.

The Federal Highway Administration says Americans drive 13,500 miles per year on average. A little over 1,000 miles a month.

I'm going to use my Tremors combined 19 mpg average as my base.

Let's go with two scenarios:

0.5 mpg increase (2.63%)

1 mpg increase (5.26%)

Now how many gallons of gas will it take to drive 13,500 miles at the three MPG averages:
19 = 710.53 gallons
19.5 = 692.31 gallons
20 = 675 gallons

Lets assume that gas is $4 a gallon, this will be the cost per year at the MPG averages:
19 = $2842.12
19.5 = $2769.24
20 = $2700

0.5 mpg increase is a $72.88 savings per year.
A 1 mpg increase is a $142.12 savings per year.

Right now the scoop is $120 to my door.

At a .5 mpg increase it would take 84 weeks to hit ROI.

As you can see with a 1 mpg increase you'd hit ROI in under a year, around 44 weeks.

They claim that a modified Ranger for off-road, saw an increase of two mpgs, from 17.6 to 19.6, or a 11.36% increase.

That seems a little too good to be true.

But let's run those numbers.
17.6 mpg will take 767.05 gallons to travel 13,500 miles, and at $4 a gallon, it will cost $3068.18.

19.6 mpg will take 688.78 gallons to travel 13,500 miles, and at $4 a gallon, it will cost $2755.12.

A savings of $313.06, or $6 a week.

So I have just turned 10k on my ranger and have had it 20 mos, so 500 miles a month average. I buy Premium due to a Tune and get 21 mpg on a good day. The kicker, gas is $6.50 a gallon right now.

It would take me quite a bit longer and a few more $. Although I did get an AFE intake scoop as I think it looks better than the stock one, but it didn't see that big 1-2 mpg gain.

I take them for what they are, but so many variables, mostly how you drive and the fuel you use.

btw, I didn't think anybody would actually do all that calc's, so Thank you!

IF I got any improvement I'd say it's been less than .5 mpg. I bought it when it first came out an I don't think I paid half that so it wasn't a big deal, just worth a shot. I still haven't gotten the larger scoop that goes into the air box. Maybe the 2 together might made a measurable change.

I bet the two together could best case scenario give you 0.5 mpg change. I do think intake temps are probably lower, which is great.

I never did any before and after MPG testing, but with the two combined and a tonneau cover, if I behave I can get 22 highway (70-80 mph).

That's on my Tremor with a Livernois tune.

But average around 17. Lots of short city trips.

There's only anecdotal evidence that there's any fuel savings. I've had mine on since the first week I had the truck and I see the same mileage as every other person on the forum driving a pretty stock Tremor. It's definitely in the looks category of accessories.

I keep putting one in my cart, and then I take it out, then I put it back in, and so on and so on.

Usually it's cause some other flashy thing caught my eye like this today https://scgarageworks.com/product/2019-ford-ranger-oem-custom-carbon-fiber-steering-wheel/

Finally got the ARB skids and front recovery points on, so I can move something else on to the spinning project plate, will likely get one at some point.
That steering wheel has been on my mod list, but I'm keeping things simple.

I 100% am ordering a Ranger Raptor once order open, so dropping a grand on a steering wheel on a truck that I'll keep another year or two is hard to justify.

Considering how many other mileage-related variables are involved--aggressive tires, leveling, tuning, driving in Sport, loving the turbo, hating the Auto S/S--there is no way to know if the "Big Mouth" will actually save me MPG and money over the long run. But, hey, it "looks cool," which is good enough for me!

I'd suggest if you gain the equivalent of an extra gallon's distance in highway driving per tank (the only conditions you're going to gain a benefit) then factor the cost of fuel - that's changing the math almost daily.

Gas formulations are changing too so who knows - although my performance and gas mileage did not suffer perceptibly with 94 octane E30. Which was cheaper than 'regular' premium.
