The Land Rover Defender:

I kinda forget these existed and they are surprisingly cheaper than I thought they'd be. Looks to be more configurable than the Bronco too. You can even get it with a snorkel and air suspension. I priced and equipped one for $64K

I love where your head is at haha. At that price you are getting no options and a 2.0 engine for $65k. All of the ones I want are closer to $100k. 5.0 V8 and all that...

I would probably go with the new Landcruiser or Lexus GX550 over the Defender. I have a co-worker with the Landrover Sport - which is beautiful - but it’s in the shop constantly.

They are beautiful cars but you would never keep one past warranty, unless you happened to be a good mechanic your self. They have a link to the 6G Rangers though, they use the same 3.0 V6 diesel that the Rangers use in our and other non NA markets.

This is another worthy competitor, although I don't know if they are available in NA. Just think if your were building a car from scratch and picking all the best bits, that's exactly what this lot have done, BMW 3.0 petrol or diesel engine, ZF 8 speed auto, Tremec all gear transfer, Carraro locking diffs, etc.

Everyone is salivating over Chevron getting overturned. For all sorts of things even claiming we'll be able to get these overseas rigs now. Who knows.?‍♂

I knew a guy who had an older Defender years ago and despite my assumptions he kept it going pretty well.

Older defenders were not so bad, they were actually pretty tough and mechanically simple. The newer ones however are computer server clusters on wheels.

My buddy just got one and his was 80k+. It is beautiful but too much $$ for me.

Well OK but what do their drum sleeves look like?

Well, technically the Discovery was the poor mans Range Rover, the Defender was the spartan off road oriented model. But Land Rover kind of lost their way and began to blur the product lines, hence opening up the way for products like the Ineos Grenadier.
It's the product of a British multi billionaire who bemoaned the loss of the original Defender when Land Rover turned something simple and rugged into a luxury server farm on wheels, and so he dreamed up the concept of a Defender vehicle type clone. Initially he even asked Landrover to sell him the old plant and rights when they ceased production, and they refused.
So he built a clone from scratch, and later when Land rover tried to sue, ( twice) the finding was that (a) He had tried to acquire the design legitimately, (b) and although very similar looking it was in fact quite a distinct and different design under the skin, so basically they had no case.
