I was watching this review:

I haven't seen anything, anywhere about it. Figured I'd ask if any of y'all have seen this happen.

I read somewhere it's easy to turn the knob on accident, and think that maybe that's what the "reviewer" did. Ford's been making trucks long enough that I don't think that this is likely flaw.

Thanks!

I haven't turned the knob on accident, but it sounds like someone else here on this forum has. I've not heard anyone report any issues with it popping out of 4 low by itself. I'm still a little baffled as to how you would do this with your knee though. The dial is a ways back from the edge of the console. But stranger things have happened. If someone was able to knock it into 4 high, maybe the same thing was done to move it out of 4 low? Or do you have to put it back into N to put it back into 4 high? I only used 4 low a couple times on my old Ranger and have never used it on my new one yet.

It's straight BS, I got the truck to shift all the way to 8th in 4Lo. I was doing like 30+ at that point, there is no way (mechanical or electrical) that it can shift from lo to high without you being in neutral, and stopped with your foot on the brake. Those guys were just confused as to what mode they left it in.

I know on my old Ranger even if you flicked the switch from 4 low to 4 high (or 2 high), it wouldn't actually move until you stopped and put the truck in neutral. I would assume the new ones are similar. The only "on the fly" shifting was 2 high to 4 high.

I figured it was just the reviewer not knowing what he is doing. The setup and the way they completed the comparisons do not fill me with confidence. Thanks for the replies, gents!

2h to 4h, and 4h to 2h can be shifted on the fly, the e locker can also be cycled while driving, but it has an upper speed limitation where it shuts off until you reach the lower threshold.

I like TFL, but they are a loooooong way from being truck experts. They make such a big deal about the ZR2 and Gladiator front lockers, but fail to mention that the Ranger FX4 and Tacoma Off-Road/Pro do in fact have "brake lock differentials, auto-LSD, brake simulated lockers" or whatever you want to call it to prevent free-wheeling. There are also MANY other examples of them not giving the full story, or just not knowing what they are talking about.

In this case, my bet is that they simply did not get 4-low to engage before starting the obstacle, and the truck shifted the knob back to 4-high after a certain amount of time after the failed engagement. My Fusion Sport with the dial shifter would shift into park if I shut the car off while still in gear. I can see the Ranger doing that ONLY with the dial (ie: just the indicator is moved if the truck isn't actually in the desired gear), but shifting the actual gears from low to high would be a pretty violent action if it were to happen on the move.

It's early, and my coffee isn't all the way in gear, so I hope what I just said makes sense.

Edit: Oops. It's been a while since I watched this particular vid. It's Edmunds, not TFL. My statements stand, though. Edmunds is even more ignorant when it comes to facts.

This video drives me nuts.
The whole idea of 'waiting till you NEED 4 low' -which for them is mid way up a trail, stuck on an obstacle- is just ridiculous. low range is to make it easier on the engine/drivetrain, and to give you more speed control, while at low speeds. it doesn't somehow magically give you extra traction as they seem to think it should. only lockers/traction control system will do that.

If you don't just shift into low range when the trail starts to get slow/bumpy, then you don't really know what you're doing and shouldn't be making a video about it.

I was curious after watching that video if anyone else had it move from 4lo to 4hi.

glad to see it’s not automatic.

I did however one day some how put it in 4hi and didn’t even notice until I realized the truck was driving tighter and sure enough I was in 4hi. I must have bumped the knob just right.

It’s possible that they were messing with the trail management and chose normal. In my experience (and frustration) it kicks it out of 4 and into 2wd. Not sure if it happened in 4hi or 4lo but it made me look like I didn’t know what I was doing!?
