Saw an article online about this incident. They said the woman driving the KIA walked away from it. She is getting a new car and a retirement fund out of this one.
She also qualified for Astronaut wings.

We are overlooking a key fact here. It was a Tacoma and they are legendarily overrated and frail.

It most likely would have never happened were it not for the prepubescent-minded driver and their odd fascination with destroying the handling and off road characteristics of an already perennially overrated toy. I can think of no beneficial purpose for wheel spacers --except to bandaid a poorly selected wheel/tire combination. They do apply an additional lever force which is generally not controlled for, or perhaps even comprehended by the installer.

Straight negligence, and I'm happy it didn't end up hurting anyone. This is the kind of nonsense that provokes the charlatans in government to over regulate human behavior. These folks ruin it for the rest of us. The a-hole probably had a bad wheel shake for weeks prior and kept ignoring it.

Here's David Tracy discussing ...
How a wheel spacer (or a wheel with different offset/backspacing) can affect bearing durability by increasing a key moment arm,
It is a good post to a discussion about why the wheel came off the truck, really long and detailed, but at the end his conclusion is what most of us knew immediately within 5 seconds of watching the video.

Apologies. Upon a zoomed in view, I stand corrected --it's a Chevy truck. Even more overrated than Toyota.

That was my thought on this, he had to have some kind of vibration and steering wheel shake and a popping noise. He ignored all 3. I find it rather hard to believe there was not any kind of early indication of something is wrong. Now I have never installed wheel spacers myself, but dealt with a few in my automotive career, I will say it is very important to check lug nut torque frequently. I am curious where it actually broke and is the rest of the hub laying in the road, I am thinking that the outer CV joint was stretched to far outboard and overstressed the hub assembly. But without actually seeing the truck its just a guess.

Yeah, I too doubt it was the hub-bearing assembly that let go. Were it 4WD, the CV axle and nut would have held it together. If it were 2WD, the noise would have been horrendous for a looong time prior to failure. My money is that the man-boy failed his lugs or spacer assembly.

I'd like to see some photos.

Agreed, quality spacers, with quality hardware/lugs/fasteners, when installed with care, are likely safe in all but the most extreme situations.

But, the CDC reported that 4% of Americans drank or gargled bleach without dying in 2020. However, just because they didn't die, doesn't make that a good idea either.

Those of you quick to blame spacers and wheel offset, please consider poor workmanship as well. Ignoring lug torque specs or simply maintenance check can do the damage as well.

Here's a good one, fresh off the press.

I stopped flying years ago just because I preferred road trips but I'm certainly not going back now.

The Federal Aviation Administration found dozens of issues throughout Boeing’s 737 MAX jet production process, including mechanics at one of its key suppliers using a hotel key card and dish soap as makeshift tools to test compliance, according to a report.
