Just picked up a used Ranger. It’s still under warranty, but I’m getting a weird jolt from the transmission when I’m slowing down or stopping at a light. It feels exactly like something heavy sliding in the bed and hitting the back of the cab. Anyone else dealt with this?

I had to have my 2019 driveshaft and rear ring and pinion replaced under warranty for same issue. I think I was in in the mid 60k miles range when it got bad. Search the site for driveshaft issues. Might even be pinned.

My 22 has had it on and off since new. It appears to be skipping down a couple gears just before stopping but not hitting first until just after stopping looking at the indicator. Doesn't occur often but feels like something hit me in the rear when it does. I'm at 7,600 miles now and it still randomly does it.

Sounds like the driveshaft splines sticking and suddenly releasing at stop. Probably needs to be lubricated.

Mine has done it since new , 21000 miles now , hopefully yours IS the driveshaft splines but mine is just the crappy 10R80 slamming into whatever gear ⚙ it hopes to find when coming to stops, luckily though, mine is mostly flawless on acceleration and crusing (sport and tow modes only , not "D") but it probably clunks on me once or twice a week ?

They drove it about 30 miles and looked at that when they did the windshield recall. Basically said wait till it gets worse. Usually the transmission is still in 3rd or 4th gear and jumps to 1 st after stopping when that happens.

My truck did the same (among many other transmission issues). First gear hanging on too long then suddenly releasing, throwing you forward. Feels like someone rear ended your truck.

Changing the fluid and adding LubeGard Platinum... then clearing / resetting the transmission adaptive tables and training the transmission cured mine.

See the attached PDF for details.

BTW, mine started acting up at 8K miles - the same jolt. By 15K I began driving it much less, things had gotten that bad. I dove it on 3K miles the next 2 years researching for answers. At 18K, I had installed the FitzStick, making changing the fluid trivial. I changed it 3 times in 1K miles, each time replacing 7.5 qts. Added LubeGard Platinum each time. The last time I swapped the pan for the PPE deep pan and changed the filter.

I then reset the adaptive tables. It has been fine since.

I'm not done yet... But I am closing in on what I think will make it last.

Oh, and that first change, the fluid was black as coal. Filthy!

I recently picked up my vehicle after reporting a transmission jolt. On day one, the technician could not replicate the issue, so the dealership kept the car for an additional day and a half. Ultimately, I was told no faults were found, but the Transmission Control Module (TCM) was reset. The car is driving normally now; however, I noticed the TCM reset was not documented in the service report. Given that I have only owned this vehicle for a week and have a limited 3,000-mile warranty, I want to ensure this reset isn't a temporary fix for a larger underlying issue.

Is the limited 3000 mile warranty from the dealer that sold you the used truck and also found no issue? If so you may want to have a different dealer do a diagnostic on it. Might cost you a diagnostic fee but you’ll get an unbiased opinion.
