Tires/wheels input

Got a 2019 Ranger XLT Sport 4x4, looking for some AT/mud tires. I'm in LA so most of my driving is city, but I do ski several times a year and am looking for a recommendation for an all around AT/mud tire and whether or not I shoud stay with the stock rims or go with a different size. Any thoughts?

For starters you need to stay away from a Mud Terrain if you barely go OffRoad. For occasional use an All-Terrain is ok. What AT to use? Good question as there are many to choose from. I myself like the Firestone Destination XT. Then again that might be a bit much for what suits you best. Perhaps the Firestone Destination AT2 is all you need. Just keep in mind what you will be doing.

Terra grapplers are amazing but mediocre for actual mud. So be warned.

toyo m/t have great highway manners for a mud tire but are a touch heavy.

I have heard good things about the Falken Wildpeaks but have zero experience with them. If I didn’t do so much highway driving they would be my next tire.

If you're going to keep the truck otherwise stock and just want something to deal with the slop of a ski hill, the Michelin LTX series of tires would serve you nicely.

I have the Wildpeaks and really like them. Good on pavement, dirt, rain and snow. Can’t comment on thick mud. Would definitely buy them again.

I really like the Falken Rubitrek A/T. I have driven them on snow, ice, loose gravel and they are my daily driver. I have used BFG KO2's, and Duratrac's as well. For a daily driver with occasional offroad use I really like the Rubitreks.

I was running Nitto Recon Grapplers on my last ranger, was very happy with them for a combo of highway and off-road driving.

Edit: forgot to mention, I also am a snowboarder and the Recon Grapplers were adequate in the snow. Never had slippage in snow, but definitely some in really icy parking lots early in the morning. Not sure they're the best winter tires if you're living in it, but they're good enough if you just visit like me.

Considering that you stated that you are in the city most of the time I would stick with stock sizes. There is no functional need to change this. The ranger can handle a lot directly from the factory. Upgrade as needed if you start doing more technical trails.

It is generally thought that 265 is the largest size without rubbing the inner fenders while turning.

Should be able to get a 265/65/18 on there without any issues.

Hello.

I generally drive on highways until I hit the gravel road, then on gravel roads, and then 4x4 low to get that last 1/4 mile into the lessor used fishing lakes.

As others have stated, don't go with mud tires unless you are offroading 75% of your miles. All Terrain are 90% there, and much better in every other regard. I had 33" TOYO Mud Terrain tires on my former Jeep TJ. Loved them for mud and off-roading, but did not love them on paved roads; they were heavy, costly and wore out quickly.

My 2021 XLT now has TOYO ATIII 235/80 r17 on stock wheels, love them onroad and offroad. They are the "Perfect" tire.
