My wife drives a 2021 Leaf and loves it. She's actually been through several PHEV (Ford C-Max) before moving to a full electric, and she's always liked the electric drivetrain and never needing to stop for gas. We installed a level 2 charger in the garage, so charging is simply not an issue for her. She uses her car as a commuter around town mostly, and it's *fantastic* for that.

However - need to pull something? Haul something? Need to drive more than 250 miles away? Yeah, we take my Ranger, and love it.

wtf was it like to drive ???
It was weird. Both the model 3 and Y drove smoothly. The silence of the powertrain would take getting used to. Reminded me a lot of a Camry hybrid but felt much heavier. Handled deceptively well considering the curb weight, but the battery location keeps the center of gravity low.

^ This!

It works for a lot of people. We have owned our Model Y for 2 months and a little over 1k miles. Total cost has been ~$20 in electricity. We've only needed to charge at home, which keeps the cost in check. It's not a tow vehicle and we don't haul stuff in it. That's why I still have my Ranger. The fact that an EV can fill the needs of 70% of vehicles currently on the road, is one of the reasons their numbers will continue to climb. But haters gonna hate! :)

What I fail to understand is that in order to get an ev you have to spend a minimum of 45k. 35k or so for the car and another 10k for a freaking charger. Way too much for what is essentially a grocery getter IMHO. I just can’t justify the cost. I will stick with my ICE

Who told you it was $10k for a charger? Our plug in one was $200 and that's all we've needed so far. The wall charger I bought is a bit more involved, so $500 for the charger and $1,300 for the 50 foot 60A run from our panel to the garage. Gets installed next week. Don't forget the minimal maintenance, too.

You can pick numbers to reflect any result you want. Accounting departments do it all the time.

I just dont see how an apartment complex is going to handle charging everyone car. Then if i dont have a cord, i am stealing one. Or having mine stolen, plus parking garages?? Thats a lot more weight. Plus my house? An extension cord to the front yard. Take turns charging cars? What if i have. Lightning and my son 19 has a tesla? I have to pay for plug ins? I have lots of questions that dont seem feasable or convenient for me and my family. Are we being forced to change?

Lots of questions

well not all of us plebs and peasants will be able to own or afford a car in a few years at the rate things are going. which is part of the plan.

I am neutral about EVs, but the idea of buying a second-hand Tesla is about as appealing as buying a used cell phone.
That goes for a used "any vehicle" for me. If I don't know how well it was taken care of, I don't want to risk it.

guess prices have come down, assuming you don’t have to do minor things like upgrade your service , add a bigger electrical box, or redo your wiring all of which can add considerable to the cost., which you apparently don’t have to do.

be that as it may, with the current state of the tech and infrastructure you still have a 35k dollar grocery getter. A pant load more that I care to pay

Have to say that Chevrolet Volt was best of both world. Electric drive and unlimited range with a generator.

Other alternatives with similar technology:
- Pacifica PHEV
- Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
- Mazda MX-30 R-EV

I really cannot understand why this EV+generator drive train model is not more widely adopted as it is most efficient and economical long term setup and anything big has utilized this since 60's and the trend is increasing. e.g. diesel-electric trains, diesel-electric dumpers, diesel-electric ships, diesel-electric excavators, diesel-electric lawn mowers, etc..

You've paid less than half than the national average for that charge so far.

For the rest of us increasing the demand for electricity is going to raise the cost of that infrastructure enormously.

Having a private source of electricity via solar panels would be a long term investment - maybe longer than the EV you buy it for - but I'd bet the government will meddle with that eventually as well. The current return on investment on solar panels is currently measured in decades.

Insurance is already higher for EVs, I can't imagine what it would be for a teenager in a Tesla. My regular Ranger insurance is jumping every renewal, despite no accidents, no points and having progressive insurance for 10+ years. I guess they need the extra money to pay for their lawsuit. Really across the board insurance is skyrocketing to the point some state regulators are stepping in. I made a post complaining about it jumping 6 months ago and now here I am again, dammit.
