I won't argue about it being heavy as I have mentioned it on the original thread a little over a year ago(close to two). Compared to a portable tool box? The portable tool box takes up space that you are trying to maximize so not really a good comparison there. Won't argue the latch rods.much as it was a little pain to set, but once it was set I was good.

Put simple it is great for the small things(straps and what not) since the space is limited. Even with a camping setup it can be beneficial. For me it was the lack of storage under the rear seats(we all know that tiny space sucks and Ford could have done better).

Is it for everyone? Not really because it all depends on your needs.
I initially went with this purely based on the logic of maximizing space. What I learned from this particular mod is that while I really dig the concept, the weight of it negated the value of space savings for me as it’s impacting my payload which is more important to me. I am also finding myself nervous at how much weight I have on my tail gate when down when I have the HF area filled.

I do agree we all have different needs and I could see someone getting value out of this but not sure it’s even close to the majority or even worth making based on their time / effort based on its current weight / design. I’d like to see what it cost in carbon fiber.

Here is all the crap I keep in mine when DD.. slightly diff when camping. Either way I have learned to focus on light things. Again I’d be hard pressed to recommend this over a little case like I have in the bed.

With all the stuff I see in there something tells me you are at more than double the weight of the storage container itself. I know that thing has some weight to it but with all the stuff you have and I know it's very heavy.

@Frenchy what is the max carry weight? I honestly don’t know. What do you store in yours?

While I have it full, I would only consider the tools on the left side to have noticeable weight and I wouldn’t consider a ratchet set heavy. Everything else is very light even when consider as a whole.

If not mistaken the Tailgate has a max load of 200 LBS when down. Up I can't say. What do I have in mind right now? Sail boat fuel. I don't have the truck but still have the storage unit

You mean I have to cut....
into.......
the tailgate.....
of my Ranger.......
with a SAW ?????!!!!!!
NOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!
NADA !!!!!!!
NYET !!!!!!!!
NO WAY JOSE !!!!
I have to agree... and not only that but cutting out key structural members that provide rigidity to the tailgate right across the point where the cables connect is a big no-no to me. I definitely would not want a motorcycle tire bearing it's weight on the tailgate anymore.

Ph heck no... not cutting my tailgate to pieces...I like the idea, but I draw the line at cutting the tailgate.
Then don't buy it.

They're completely full with the stuff I want to put in the tailgate. Then I can put other stuff in the tiny spaces under the rear seats.

I believe it's 485 pounds.

Yikes, either me or Cheech need to lose a little weight when hanging out in the driveway sitting on the tailgate! =D

Not really interested in getting one, but for the sake of information, how good are the seals around that? Do any of you who have one notice water getting in during rainstorms? If so, how often & how heavy a rainstorm does it have to be?

I'd have two major concerns about that:
1) (The obvious) Stuff inside getting wet, and then having to dry it out before it mildews.
2) Being in snow country, snow building up along the seams, freezing, and then warping the whole affair.

After dealing with both I can say I didn't have an issue. That said I also had a tonneau cover. It covered it enough where rain and snow didn't bother it.
