If you found yourself here reading this I’ll first start off and say this is a Ford Ranger forum, get your filthy minds out of the gutter. ?

Anyway I posed this question the Phil, so I’ll ask everyone so you can all take turns telling me either how dumb I am (most likely) or you’re gonna blow yourself up if you keep driving (not as likely).

So why when cold do my RPMs rev up much higher (louder as well) than normal when shifting from first to third? I’ve been using the remote start since I got the truck and it’s been very cold. When I dont remote start the first two minutes of shifting when 1st to 3rd, with light to moderate pedal pressure has the truck see 3000 + ish rpm’s. RPMs seem to hang a bit. I wouldn’t say any harsh shifts, maybe some jumpy downshifts and firm up shifts but nothing I’m concerned with. I really noticed this today when hoping back in my truck from a 10-15 minute stop at the gas station. Figured truck was still warmed up since I drove home an hour and this stop was after that. But turned truck on and took off maybe 20-30 seconds later with first revving really high before going to third. No hard shift, firm but felt like I was almost in neutral it even though I had normally pedal pressure. Also much louder but wondering if that may be the cooling fan?”
If you’re still reading this, I sincerely apologize ?. You could be off fishing or something rather than here, listening to my dumb, long drawn out question.

Also, if this is normal why exactly do these trucks do this. I’d like to understand the mechanism of why this happens so I can be slightly less ignorant. My older trucks did this a little bit but not as pronounced as this truck. Larger transmission?Again no lurching, shifts were normal for a “cold truck”.

The RPM's drop fairly quickly with little warmup. It is not unusual for the truck to skip second on these trucks and a tune fixes that. The loud noise you hear when cold could be the clutch fan which turns heads when you drive by people.

Yeah the majority of the time in normal my truck shift 1st to 3rd. Once driven a bit and when taking off from a stop the truck doesn’t rev up nearly as high when in 1st. Definitely associated with the first few initial takeoffs but curious why. Very well could be the clutch fan. Seems louder in this scenario.

Just like me the Transmission hates being cold. ? But once warm it acts normal again. If you want to see a vast improvement get it tuned. It'll still hate it when cold but greatly improved the shifting and smoothness once warmed up.

Interestingly enough going into reverse doesn’t do it.

Ive been duped.... Your trans needs a gender reassignment surgery. Then it will hit all the even gears.

In all seriousness it stays in gear slightly longer when cold. Whether it is because the trans(transmission) is sluggish due to thick fluid or the engine it trying to warm itself. Either way mine does it too.

Clutch fan? These things don't have electric fans?

The loud fan noise during the first 30 seconds or so is what Phil calls morning sickness. It has to do with the fan's hydraulic clutch fluid draining down to the bottom. Perfectly normal and all our Ranger's do it.

First off..... I will have my mind wherever I please...... Just imagine how Dave gets when he hears anyone talk about a Damper!!

As for the main subject, this is normal. Put simple it is the strategy for the powertrain for what Ford has figured to be the most effective was to get the powertrain upto operating temperature. Yes it is a pain, but it is what it is. When I had the Livernois Tow tune it did the same thing.

Nothing to worry about here

Yeah an 87 tune is on my list. Glad to hear it hates the cold…makes me feel better. Shifting has been decent in normal as long as I drive it hard. Truck doesn’t like it when I zone out and baby the throttle or when I’m behind an old lady going up a hill. When all I see is knuckles driving the car I know I’m in trouble ?

Just got back from a drive after reading this. Most probably the fan you are hearing. It quiets down after 3rd. And the fan queits down after a few minutes.
Now my transmission does shift a little funky until it warms up after a minute or 2, so I usually start it and let it run for a minute before backing out of the drive. It's gotten better since miles have been added on.
I kind of enjoy crawling slowly through the neighborhood with the fan loudly reving.
A good test is to jump in start it up and sit inside for a minute and listen to the fan until it quiets down then start your trip. See if you hear the same and it shifts the same.

Haha Appreciate it. Makes sense. I’m coming from 20 year old vehicles mostly so there is a learning curve for me to adapt to this truck. She’s stubborn but fun.
