What gives with the updates? Seems like every time I plug in my phone to run Apple Carplay, I have to agree with FoMoCo each time. I had to disconnect the battery to get rid of the locked up screen, then downloaded the updates. After waiting patiently for the download to finish, the screen locked up again. Now the battery is disconnected again and then I'll see what happens.
Additionally, every time I tried to download the updates, I had to sign in to my wifi.....what gives? I'm so over this cheap set up!

ya, ford doesn't like Apple, Apple Car Play, Apple Phones etc... never has, the trick is, never plug in your phone in the front, use the back plugs for the back seat passengers

as far as the updates go, I had screen freeze from day one until I went through all the updates using a memory stick, took me three hours with the engine running. No more screen freeze but I never use Apple Car Play. If I'm going to plug my phone in to charge it I use the outlets for the back seat passengers. Hope this helps.

I don’t use CarPlay often but don’t think I’ve ever had it lock up. Lately I’ve had stutters with USB playback though and starting to wonder if it’s a weak battery. Would rather it be a weak battery than a faulty head unit.

Ref: Apple Carplay issue - It appears your phone is not registered to the truck or an issue with it.
Try removing the phone from the truck and reregister.
Also try, rebooting the phone itself.

Ref: Updates, I am assuming you are referring to the Sync Update
Are you truly letting it finish, it will cycle through a few times, screen powers down and reboots.
In the background it does a verification check for the download file before it actually installs it.

It is always best for Sync updates is to use the USB way, the automatic updates are known for issues for corrupting the file download.

Yeah, never had that kind of lock up either. I only plug in my iphone to charge it, and even then I don't recall it asking for any creds, etc. I don't play music from my phone, only use bluetooth to connect the telephone... I guess it also connects when I plug it in, but never had any nag messages when I do that.

Well, I just went online to Ford's website and I did have an account with the truck registered. According to the site, I'm all up to date. I'm not so sure though.
I also see that with Sync 3 you have to pay for a map update. That won't be happening.
Thanks for the help guys, I'll try the back plugs for the phone.

Every time I get in, my iPhone is plugged in one of the USB ports in front to keep it charged...the other plug is always connected to my iPad. I've never experienced this issue with lock up you're speaking of...

What I have problems with is, on occasion when I plug in, the port doesn't recognize my device and is not charging...this also happens to the ipad...it goes away when I finish shopping the next time I start the truck...this happens about once a month...

This happens to me too, probably once a week or so. Restarting SYNC usually fixes it.

Sync can be very annoying...sometimes, one port doesn't charge or see device so I have to go fish the plugs and swap them...that works...sometime...

I bought a unit to make my sync 3 wireless CarPlay. Only have my phone hooked to it and Bluetooth turned off on the truck. Start truck and within 10-15 seconds all hooked up to Apple CarPlay wirelessly. Works great

its not a Ford problem, its an Apple problem, I think last month apple said they were going to stop carplay support and updates because to many issues they cant seem to resolve ie: its making them look bad LOL
I was Apple way back in the mid 80s had all their phones upto about 6 years ago and gave TF up on them for good, I will never own anything with an apple logo on it ever again, you gota know if their products got shitty enough to piss off a decades long user its a pretty bad product?
9 months every day use, I probably plug it in 5 times a day, I have never had even one issue with my "android" auto hooking up, cable or bluetooth it just works ...

That happens with my ipod that stays in the tray plugged in. Sometimes it won't find it, even if I unplug/plug it. The port is dead. I have to shut the engine off and walk away with the fob, and when I come back it works. Only happened a few times, but yeah.

Exactly the same...wonder why this happens...just glad it only happens once or twice a month...
