Hi guys,

My factory-delivered Hankooks are getting low on tread, and I'm in the market for replacements.

I live in the South, but do spend a good bit of time in the NC mountains (small family cabin there), especially in the winter. At 4500 feet of elevation, it does get a good bit of snow/ice. The Hankooks did perfectly fine last year, but it was a milder winter. The few times I did hit snow/ice though, they did the job.

I do have chains if I need them, but looking for a tire which will give good performance all year around and a good value. I could just go back with the Hankooks, but think there might be better options for my situation.

Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

My personal fav are the Toyo ATIII but all of the above are good choices.

If all you do is regular pavement with some snow here and there when you go up to the cabin, I recommend the Cooper AT3 4S. They will be the best on the road (less noise, better fuel millage, good wet traction) and will do the job when you get up to the cabin in the winter.

In any case. whatever tires you decide to buy, make sure to get tires with the tripeak symbol on them for that extra peace of mind and snow performance.

Thanks! I do go offroad a bit year round, but not *that* often...just rough backroads (mostly gravel with some big bumpiness) or mud roads but nothing like scary...

Those Toyos look really nice. Can't find them anywhere though in stock. A local tire shop recommended the Yokohama Geolanders and a replacement....any thoughts on Yokohama Geolanders vs Toyo Open Country ATIII vs the Copper AT3 4S?

Toyo Open Country A/T III - "Mountain Snowflake" qualified for severe snow conditions

I can't speak to the snow performance personally since I'm in Texas, although we did have some snow last year for a couple days before I had my Toyos...

I CAN tell you they are excellent in wet weather! I've done several 3-5 hour trips in heavy downpours going 65-80MPH and felt secure the entire time. Been fine on hot pavement in 98 degrees too.

The only issue you may have with Toyo OP A/T III is finding anyone with stock. A buddy at work tried to buy some for his Gladiator and could not find anyone with stock. He didn't want to wait and ended up getting the Cooper AT3 4S which is a good option as well, especially for snow.

Specifically, the Yokohama Geolander A/T G015 is the one the tire shop guy recommended....

With all due respect, be careful with what the "tire shop guy" recommends. Not saying what he recommended isn't a good choice for you, but in my experience they will move you to a tire they have, or know they can get overnight from another shop. Again, not saying the Geolander isn't a good choice, or that your particular "tire guy" isn't honest, just do your homework before you commit.

Very good advice and thank you. Any recommendations for places to compare tires like this? Aside from posting here, I'm not sure where else to do homework ;)

Discount Tires website will allow you to compare tires as will Tire Rack. I’ve used both to compare tires.

When I bought my 5th gen 4Runner, it came with Geolandar A/T's. Amazing on road tire if it never rains, or snows, or anything other than dry pavement................

They were completely useless off-road, they kept hydroplaning on-road and had no traction in snow, not ice, snow.

I would stay far away from these tires.

I can speak on Falken Wildpeaks for dry use highway only.. They perform amazingly on highway for "off-road" mixed tires. I did not notice a sound increase and they perform pretty much the same as the factory handkooks from speeds of 90mph+ which gives me confidence in their highway ability. It has not rained, nor have I gone towards the mountains for snow and I have not yet off-roaded in them since it has been quite warm out. Wish I could offer insight on these Wildpeaks for those situations. Amazing sidewall tread design though...
