Someone in my family backed gently into something the other day and broke the rear tail light.

Do I have to replace the whole unit or can the plastic part be replaced?

Hoping to avoid an insurance claim at those prices!

That's not what happened at all , I believe you were at Wal-Mart and when you came out , you found it like that....

$1500.00 per taillight...

Your insurance company will love you and take your deductible if that's the case , but If I remember right, you came out of Walmart and found it like that, which eliminates the deductible...
Those lights are over a grand and with body shop time it cost my insurance about 1400 bucks... when I came out of Walmart, I found mine like that...

It's true actually, except I came out of HomeDepot, not Walmart, and admiring my Ranger as I approached I saw the cracked lens ?, ended up in an insurance argument as they said it was a "collision" and I would be on the hook for 500 of it , nope ...

The fix is better than taping it up with the tail light tape and waiting for a torrential rain storm 6 months later to short out a bunch of harnesses on the truck. While on a cross country road trip lol.

Ask me how I know

Ouch! You can replace both with aftermarket for what that one OEM will cost. Luckily your radar module should be OK and be able to be moved to the new lights.

Definitely keep any water out of it until you can replace it. The BLIS module can be transferred to a new light housing is my understanding. Not certain how susceptible the module is to water intrusion, but would play it safe.

Me when I see cracked taillight

I still have my original cracked one on the truck, and 2 "replacements" on my shelf that are also cracked. And a good clean used set if I ever decide to trade the truck in lol.
