Before getting my Ford Ranger I was driving a 2010 Honda Accord 5 speed manual that I planned on selling after getting the truck. It had 100K miles but was in very good condition, and I sold it last Sunday to a young soldier who was wanting a car while he was stationed near here. I came down $500 from my asking price and he test drove it and bought it. On Monday his father, whom I had talked to prior to his son buying the car, text me and told me that the car was broken down and he had to have it towed to a repair shop. From what he has said it was the clutch that had gone out and it's going to be around 2K to repair it. o_O I have no way to know exactly what happened as it didn't show any issues prior to my selling it but I am going to call the repair shop tomorrow. Now I know I have no responsibility for this vehicle once I sold it but I feel really badly for this young man and his father has been very understanding and I feel that this is all on the up and up. I feel I need to do something (after verifying the repair) and my question to you is what do you think would be fair. I'll end up making my own decision but I'm just curious as to what others might think. Thanks.

I have sold plenty of cars and tell people to take them to a mechanic because they are older cars and if it’s sold it’s yours. But have never sold one to a soldier and I would probably talk with them and try and feel out what’s true or not. Was he racing around etc?

I always put in the receipt both the driver and I sign that the vehice is sold as is. I also inform the buyer if there are any issues with the vehicle before coming to a deal. Having said that, I might consider helping out on the repair if the vehicle failed the very next day. However, I would not give the buyer (or his father) any money. I would insist paying the repair facility directly after conferring with them. Also, $2K sounds too high to me for a clutch replacement. Good luck.

Dang. The original clutch on my 2006 Dodge Dakota 6-speed lasted till 175,000 before it finally disintegrated. I have no idea how long clutches are suppose to last under normal driving conditions, but I thought perhaps mine was in the upper level of lucky.

Replacement was only about $600 including labor. Is that stuff suppose to be $2k+ ????

Unfortunately yes it is. I called a place locally that we have used for years and they quoted a similar price. We ended up helping to pay for part of the repair and I feel good about doing so.

Well good for you. Some people would have told him to pound sand. I don't think I would have slept well if I was in your shoes and didn't help out.

Another side story, I sold my Dakota to some young kid for a few thousand bucks after it sat for over a year and was never driven. I find out some months later from a neighbor who knew the kid and someone pulled out in front of him and totaled it after only 2 weeks from buying it from me. Talk about bad luck.
