GAIA GPS' app is actually pretty lightweight. I would expect an older tablet should be able to run it quite easily, I wouldn't at all be surprised if one of Amazon's Kindle tablets could handle it without issues. The biggest thing you'll want to be cognizant of is storage space for offline maps.
I mentioned this idea to my mom and she pulled an old ipad out of a drawer. so I guess, I just need to get a case and mount and then get everything set up in time for Father's day. Thanks for help!

I'm too nervous to take my ranger off-road (for now- I just bought it!) but I want to get a similar setup for my dad for his kawsaki UTV in the UP of Michigan.

Do you know how resource-heavy the gaia GPS app is? I'm thinking I'll get him an older ipad in a rugged case to mount.

I assume you are able to see your tracks and waypoints on a device other than the device that ran the trail, right?

p.s. hello from the Columbus area!
Here's a great video on Gaia GPS.

It seems to be able to run on a good amount of things. NOTE!!! Get something with a good amount of storage space for the maps!!! Also, I'd get a Garmin standalone GPS as most tablets DO NOT have GPS built in and you will need to tether to and external GPS device.

This works wonderful https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/645104 paired with my IPad.

Also. Yay ohio!!! lol

Gaia GPS is my nav software of choice as well. I run it on a tablet in a ram mount in my Jeep.

I've found that if I put it on my Iphone (which I did for hiking) I can run it directly into the infotainment system on my Ranger. I will probably break down and put a ram mount for a VHF handheld and my tablet (and the required gps reciever) into my Ranger at some point, but the fact that I can run all my downloaded maps into the main display makes that a much lower priority than it would be otherwise.

Decided to do and then expand upon a RAM mount setup for my Tablet, Phone, GPS Receiver, GoPro, etc. Here's some pics of how I set it all up.

The top tray works well. Bought the 5" aluminum T track for that and bolted it through the tray. The tablet holder is two of the adhesive ball mounts together. It all works VERY well (and held up to offroad use in Colorado a couple of months ago.

I completely copied your idea and it works great! I've got my phone set up and will be stealing your idea for the ipad too when the wife and I tackle an easy part of the TAT (we'll be running Gaia GPS).

How easy is it to get the tray out to attach the bolts? Would is support a full size ipad weight?

If you ever get in an accident and your airbags go off, you and your passenger are going to be eating all those devices. Every one of those could turn into a deadly projectile.
I'm just about to put some mounts in mine. the stuff in the tray on the dash is safe, right?

Yes, the top of the dash tray is safe "safe" in that there's no airbags there.

RAM mounts are the best. Seems like theres almost an infinite way of customizing them. This is my current setup utilizing the Ranger specific seat bolt mount.

I'm about to buy this. Does the post annoy the passenger? looks like they would have to sit at a bit of an angle?

Which tablet hold is that? i have iPadPro 11 inch (2021). Their web site recommends X-grip (RAM-HOL-UN9U), but I hate those 9had one for my phone)

I've had the seat mount for a while, and generally it hasn't posed an issue that I've heard of yet. It does take away a tiny bit of legroom in the seat because of where it is, personally I find a bigger problem with just how much space it takes up around/over the shifter and in front of the center stack. However I've not yet found another solution to mounting there either. So this continues to work for me.

How stable is this mount? Does it bounce around? I’d looking to hold a tablet for off road nav use and I don’t want it moving all over the place… also does it have a big affect on the passenger ?

I've been using the seat mount for almost 3 years now, it does take up a little bit of space for the passenger but I've never had any complaints from anyone. The biggest complaint from me is it stops the passenger seat from sliding all the way forward, though it's never been an issue.

It's never vibrated, bounced, etc, in anything I've done and I've never had to adjust out tighten it since the install. The only times I've messed with it is to undo the foot support to do a deep clean of the carpets/mats.

All things considered, still 100% recommend.

I'll echo what @Gizmokid2005 said. It's really solid. No bouncing, no rattling, etc. I had my tablet mounted low to keep it from view so that would get in the way of the passengers leg (would have to raise it when I had a partner riding along), but otherwise the mount itself is pretty out of the way. Never had any complaints.
