Question about keyless entry pad

I ordered one and it arrived. When I take my truck in next month for yearly inspection/tire rotation/ oil change (only have 3400 miles, so trying to wait until end of next month when inspection runs out).... I'm going to ask for it to be programmed. I'm going to ask they not install it, I'll figure out where I want to put it. My question is... do the numbers light up when you touch them? On my Mountaineer, the key pad numbers light up when you touch one of them.

Hi, Val. I did the same as you by having the dealer program it and i installed it later. The keypad only light up sometimes. I don't know why, but it always locks and unlocks.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds then the lock & unlock is reliable at least... I assume as long as battery is good.

I have one for over a year now, it always lights up once I push a button. I wish I had requested they not install it, they put it low under the door handle. Not where i would have put it...

I'm kinda leaning towards putting it on the driver's side rear door piller. I remember seeing someone post of pic of theirs placed there. Don't want to put it inside the gas flip door as I use the keyless keypad frequently on my Mountaineer and so most likely will use it quite a bit on the Ranger.

mine is on the rear driver side door on that plastic part, blends in nicely and yes it lights up.

I'm furious! I just called the Ford dealer's service dept where I've taken my Ranger in the past. I wanted to schedule my oil change and inspection and tire rotation end of March and have the keypad programmed. Well all was fine until I said I had my own Ford Ranger keybad and just wanted it programmed but NOT installed. Said I will bring my two key FOBS. The clerk said they couldn't program the keypad unless it was installed on the Ranger! I asked to talk to the manager... she put me on hold, came back on and said her manager said it has to be on the vehicle for them to program it! I told her they didn't know what they're talking about, there's no wiring ... I'll stick it on where I want to place it after it's programmed. I finally just hung up I was so mad.

OMG I called a different Ford dealer service department and this seems to be a big deal to them too! Why on Earth would it have to be stuck on the vehicle for them to program it! Now I'm waiting for two different service managers from different dealerships to call me back and explain to me WHY the keypad has to be stuck on the vehicle for them to program it! Does not make sense to me. As long as they have the truck present, the two key FOBS and a genuine Ford Ranger keypad, I don't see the problem!

And the more I think about it.... I would want them to program it first and make sure it's working properly before they stuck it to my Ranger if I was going to let them slap it on.

Agreed, it's not a problem unless Ford put out a TSB to not do that. I'm not aware of one.

I know with my RS the dealer activated global windows on mine very shortly after I got the car. About a month after that Ford sent a TSB, or something like it, to dealers stating that they are not to activate global windows on the RS. After reviewing the MVSS documentation regarding remote window control I did some testing and found that it fails the MVSS requirement of being within x feet and direct line of sight when closing the windows. I would walk about 20 feet away on the opposite side of my house and close the windows. Because this feature did not meet MVSS requirements, I understand why Ford barred the dealers from activating it to cover their rear end if someone were leaning in the door and the window happened to injure them since Ford didn't sell the car with that enabled and had directly barred dealers from activating it.

But I can't imagine a keypad having any reasoning to have it installed on the vehicle before programming it. My dealer installed mine that way, I brought the keys in and they programmed it, later I applied it to the truck where I wanted it.
