unclear. He went a few blocks then finally pulled off to a side street. There was a language barrier, but I pointed at the dashcam a few times, he called a friend and we ended up getting it taken care of without insurance getting involved.

He admits he bought a CHEAP dash cam. After that comment I didn't waste any more of my time watching the rest. As the old saying goes "you get what you pay for"! Mine was just over $400 when all was said and done and the clarity is some of the best out there now along with the Blackview and Viofo which are also 4K cams. The Thinkware is rated for higher heat which I needed here but all 3 have excellent clarity.

LTT is a sellout. Don't trust him for advice on anything electronic.

If that is the same video I watched a week or so ago ( didn't click on it here at work today ) he does compare some higher priced units . It is true that the cameras are basically the same with some software differences and you pay a lot more for subtle quality enhancements . I'm more concerned in how well the thing holds up over time as I understand the images are going to be pretty close for most units .

Anything I get now will be better (will it be ?) than the $10 ...Yep , 10 Dolla 720P keychain camera off Ebay that I used on my old '91 Ranger for several years ,LOL . I had it velcroed down and plugged into the cig lighter . Had to press the button to start it every time I started up . Youtube compressed the video cause it actually looked a lot better .

It would've been nice if he (the op) had written something instead of just posting a video. I disagree that they're all the same except for some software changes. Most do not have the clarity to read a license plate while moving and get distorted easily. Also the cheaper ones would melt in our heat here where mine still works great after 18 months baking in the sun. The Viofo is a great dash cam especially for the price but it's not rated very high for max heat. If I ever needed to get another one and we aren't living here that's the one I would buy.

When I say the cameras are basically the same I mean the actual imager (The chipsets and lens) not the unit as a whole . There's only a couple places these all come from and the software makes the most difference in being able to read text etc . The overall quality and build of the units are vastly different in some cases .

I've been using these types of cameras in my RC hobby since 2007 and probably have 50 laying around the hobby room right now . Some of the 1080 ones are superior to a few that advertise 4k . I'd even put some of my older 480p units up against some of them , especially in low light conditions .

100% true....you get what you pay for!.....your Thinkware model and my Blackview model are very similar and have almost identical specs....both are very good and either would make a great choice!.....that guy in the video is a typical CHEAP bozo who wants everyone to think he knows it all.....wrong!....I watched and played back numerous video of my dashcam and the quality image is top notch and easy to read the license plate in 99% of the outside conditions...... BlackVue DR900X-2CH Plus Dual-Channel Cloud Dash Cam — BlackboxMyCar

but any one of those 3 would be a great choice!....bottom line, is you want to protect your truck (or My $50K Ranger Tremor Lariat) buy a decent quality unit and not the cheapo's.... you actually might need it like some members on here....

That's the one (Blackview DR900X) I originally wanted but it didn't have as high a temp rating as the Thinkware. I like the slimmer design and the Thinkware is a little more bulky but now I'm use to it. They're both so close in clarity along with the Viofo you can't go wrong with any of these 4k's. I'll admit I was going to buy a cheap one on Amazon ($99.00) but after really looking into them and watching the video I posted I was sold on these 4K's. Plus I doubt the cheaper ones would've last a year on my windshield without melting. lol

So you missed the part where he talks about cheap or expensive, most makers are getting their cameras from the same source.
Sorry I wasted your time.

I've thought about a camera. But they seem like in most cases they're kind of useless.

Most of the time the image quality, even on the "good ones," is so poor that trying to identify another vehicle is impossible. And that's the main reason I'd want one.

I'm not concerned about some "he said, she said." In any accident worth fussing over the damage will be evidence enough of what happened. I'm more concerned about the douchebag that tries to hit and run, and none of the camera I've seen are gonna help with that.

While mine and the other 4k's have great clarity and can capture a license plate under normal instances they're not perfect when it comes to motion shots. This video shows how police license plate cam readers work and how this will most likely be incorporated into the next higher end cams.

The problem is all the cameras in the middle. You have cheap = bad everything. The middle gets congested with more features but keeps the poor image quality. Then a significant jump in price to get a slightly better but actually usable image quality. The cameras can help prove another party is at fault, but still not show who that party is. Vandalism and almost anything from the side is a problem. Good front and rear protection, a wide FOV are key. And although it is handy I can view the video on my phone, it is next to impossible to make out the details needed. View the file on the computer is quite another story.
