How should I go about trying to get a high priority number at the dealer?
I am not a salesman, so do not quote me on this, but the dealer is able to assign a priority number to it and it goes into a ford system that calculates metrics of the dealership and takes this number into account, yet it doesn't mean yours goes next on the line. I also don't believe you can change that after the order has been submitted so im not sure.

I do find it odd you haven't received a vin as I received mine 2 days after order.

That being said I work in service at the dealer I ordered from, so I literally sat next to the manager while he picked the options I wanted on my special order sheet.

My father has two vehicles so I’ll be okay while the new ones getting built, I just hope it doesn’t take much longer than 2 months to build. I’ll be in his GMC Canyon ?
Lane, it sounds like you've got everything thought out really well. BTW, I don't want to rain on your parade, but my Ranger (ordered 09/01/20) took 13 weeks to show up. And, there wasn't a chip shortage at the time. So hope for the best, but expect the worst.

Yes the dealer knows the damage, they looked at the truck themselves and made their own estimate on it. They estimated 4.5-5k in damage. The only reason I have such a ridiculous estimate is because I pointed out each and every single dent on the video call with state farm.
We had a high end escape get nailed that bad a couple years ago. They fixed it with painless dent repair Fixed in 3 days time. When we sold it the dealer checked history but did not say anything to us. Hail damage is not as bad as crash damage in vehicle history I guess.

If you were my son.....I have a son entering his second year of college so my advice comes from real time and experience. I would suggest you sell the truck to the dealership and walk away with the cash from both the insurance and dealer. While they would love to sell you a truck, they need inventory and will buy it. I would then suggest buying a beater truck to get you through your college years and stop worrying about being broke and focus on getting great grades.

Skipping Dad to Son and just talking dude to due. Sell it to the dealer and keep the money and here is why I suggest that again. I sold my boat a couple of months ago because it was a Deep V style and I wanted to move to a Mod V Bass style boat as I've turned into a Bass nut. After I sold the boat and went a couple of weeks without one, I really started to question what I actually wanted. Going without, opened my eyes. Don't get me wrong, I still bought a boat, just not the one I originally thought I wanted. ;)

My point is that if you go without, you can always walk into the dealership in a month, 2 months, whatever from now and get the same selling price or you could change your mind totally and buy a Toyota! LOL ;). Personally, I like being flexible and this is one of those situations where you can take advantage of an odd market and gain personal flexibility.

I was told at the dealership that the factory can have my truck delivered in 6-8 weeks. I’m hoping that’s the case, but as far as I knew before hand was exactly what you just said, trucks sitting for weeks.
I can give you some real data for ordering one.

I ordered 6/14, but by the time dealer processed paperwork, ordered truck and it was accepted by ford is was 6/21.
I was given a build date of "week of 8/16".
dealer told me 2 days ago its now scheduled to hit assembly line 8/19 in AM.
I figure 24 hours on line, then a couple days waiting to ship = 7 days.
than It has 1200 mile train ride. (which I am betting on 30 days).
so its like 8-9 weeks to completion, and maybe 3-4 more delivery = 12 weeks.
unless there is a problem at Ford........

BUT automotive press is saying the 2021 ranger last order date was 6/25 (Just what I read, not a fact)
2022 orders scheduling starts 10/14/21
2022 Production starts up 12/13

By doing the special order on line Ford tells me I was given top priority over dealer stock orders (plus a $1000 rebate).

If my order to build time is 2 months, and 2022 production starts 12/13, I would suspect they would still be taking special orders for 2021 up to 10/14, or maybe there is a large backlog of 2021 dealer stock orders they want to fill in last 2 months of year. (or build a bunch more Broncos).

But the bean counter would say "since nothing is changing on the 2022 rangers, lets just convert all the dealer stock orders to model year 2022, start building them 9/1/21 and charge $2000 more per vehicle"

I could be wrong here, but my understanding of the priority codes is it only affects orders from your dealer. Codes can be from 10 - 19, lower being higher priority, but if you are the only order, it won't matter what priority you have. Likewise, if the dealer puts all of their special orders at a priority of 10, it won't matter. The only time it would come into play is if there are multiple orders, they will be processed in order of priority.

As to order time, I ordered on February 10th, and received my truck on May 5th. 12 Weeks to the day. I wouldn't expect it any sooner than that.

I had priority 19, for reference.

I'm guessing, but don't know, that it impacts dealers that place multiple orders at same time. I also think there's something about retail vs allotment as well. The small dealership I ordered from likely didn't have many other orders they placed, especially since they had three Rangers on the lot, including one XLT Tremor.

Funny thing, before I was looking for a Ranger, I was looking for a Tacoma. The very highest price point I could do I just wasn’t satisfied with what I was going to get for the money. Reliability also being in question with the newer gen models, I was looking at 2nd gen tacomas and still couldn’t find anything 4wd for an even halfway decent price. As far as me worrying about being broke, I only work because I have time to do it being a “full-time” student and it’s better than any other use of the time I could come up with. I don’t worry about money often, just live within my means and I save when I’m motivated to buy something I want, like this Ranger. I know there’s better uses for the money, but I guess I’m just trying to tip toe around the fact that I’m young and dumb haha. Anyway, I’ve always been a Ford guy, and so is my dad. He bought a 7.3 f250 in 1999, the year I was born and it’s still on original power train to this day at 500k+. I’ve had 3 different Ford vehicles now and they’ve all been great regardless of mileage.

Similar situation for me. Was looking at a TRD Pro. The two things that stopped me were:

1. When I test drove the Tqcoma, I didn't love it. It was just another vehicle. I didnt want to spend 50k on something I didn't love.

2. I wanted the TRD Pro Manual in a specific color. The only dealer that claimed to be able to get one wanted MSRP +5k, to which I was like nope. Find another sucker.

For me the highest I could go was under 30k, when I found out that Rangers were selling 5-7k under sticker price, I jumped on it. In my opinion, Toyota gives the US market some of its worst options. Like sell a solid axle diesel land cruiser over here and you’d have plenty of people lining up to put in orders day one. But corporate bs and US regulations would never let that happen.

I'm a full time student, but I work full time so I'm contributing to my 401k and they're paying for school. My next truck will be a 250 or maybe a f150 with the coyote but I kinda want a diesel to tow my ranger to races once it's fully caged.

It is a great time to sell I'll be selling my wife's 2017 f150 with a coyote with 100,000 miles no problems for somewhere between 25k and 30k.

Here's another opinions, for what it's worth:

It seems you're a pretty intelligent young man; that's evidenced by several things: you've articulated your position and questions well, you've sought out the advice of family and a like-minded community, and you've responded appropriately.

My opinion is based on that - I'm not going to tell you to focus on school because you're clearly doing that; money management doesn't appear to be an issue with you either. So it boils down to the truck. You're getting a helluva deal from the dealership on a truck that WILL NOT be sold down the road for that price, ever. Even without a 7k down payment your payment will not likely even approach the payment you previously had and have already payed off. You'll be getting a nicer truck that will hold it's value; the piece of mind of another warranty; a reset on needing tires, mileage and wear on the truck, etc.; and when you pay it off, you'll be building your credit up.

I, personally, wouldn't bat an eye on that offer - especially if I didn't have to worry about a vehicle in the interim - I'm not sure any of us could have created a better scenario for you to be in. Go order what you want, keep doing well in school, and enjoy the next several months of saving money and driving your father's loaner.
