Off work at 1 pm, had a destination but needed to stop at home to grab an item. Outside temp 105, pulled in garage, left truck running, in house about maybe 10 minutes if that. Returned to truck, have a temp gauge on phone via OBDII port, gauge indicating 205 ish, maybe a little higher. Drove off immediately noticed a noise that sounded like a rub?? So hard to describe a noise, definitely not a tickings sound, noise followed rpm, very audible. Came to a stop light, put it in neutral and slightly revved the engine, noise still there. Drove off, once truck temp dropped to approximately 200 noise disappeared and did not return. Something got hot, my thoughts were the turbo. As it cooled clearances improved. Noise has not returned. Supposed to be 106 today, will see if it returns.
Suggestions?
Thanks.

Maybe your engine cooling fan speed increased?

The cooling fan is supposed to kick on at 200 degrees, so more than likely it was your fan, and once you started driving, temp dropped, and fan cut off.
Does it all the time when we're towing and temp gets to 200 degrees and above.

I’ve been through 114 degrees outside temp going through Needles AZ, have never heard this before, very audible

Yours makes a rubbing sound?

I don't think you're very likely to hear it as you're driving along when it's that hot outside. I live in Phoenix and don't hear it when I'm driving along at 115*. But let me stop the truck for gas or something and crank it back up and you can bet I hear it for a little while. Like the sound school buses or garbage trucks that run on natural gas make. As the engine cools off a bit the noise dies off.
Hopefully for you it is something as simple as this!

"Sound" is relative to each of us...but I can hear it kick on when coolant temps hit the 200 degree mark.
Fan is a clutch based fan and will be noisy...but again, relative to each as to "noisy"

I’m fully aware how the fan clutch works, this is not a normal sound, nor do I think it’s the fan clutch! Could be wrong

I think everyone is confusing what I described with the noise the fan makes, this wasn’t the fan

My apologies.
I hope you find the source/answer soon. I know how aggravating such a thing can be.

Same here. Your post stated noise follows rpm's and temp was over 200 degrees, so first thing we think of is fan...
I appreciate your input, I did say sounded like a rub also. I hate trying to describe noises. I really do appreciate the input I get.

I appreciate your input, I did say sounded like a rub, should have said bearing sounding issue. My thought was turbo impeller or bearing. Five years of driving never made this noise. Hope it doesn’t do it again.
Thank you

Hmmm, anybody think it might be related to that contact that “floats” around the fan. You know, the one that grabs wires and that silly hose supporting them and shreds the harness - or worse.

If it started binding as the engine heated, it might make a rubbing noise.

Something to look at, thank you
