I owned a BMW Z3. I was rear ended at a stop sign. The insurance offered me 7k. I refused, told them to tow it. The book was about 17k. The estimate to repair was 14k. the insurance would not total the car...and it cost about 26 k to repair with the car rental. I sold the car shortly after because I didn't trust it. Everybody lost.I've had one vehicle totalled under insurance. Not a whole lot of experience, but in my situation the adjuster claimed the threshold was 50% of value. State regulations, policy differences, and maybe even owned vs leased may account for differences in the threshold.
In my situation no airbags deployed, but the shock tower was moved. Car would not have ever been the same unless I was VERY lucky. Insurance was hemming and hawing on totalling it due to value. I visited the body shop, chatted with the owner, and expressed to him that while I didn't want him to commit any fraud, I really didn't want to have to deal with the car going forward. Next day I got a call from the insurance company asking how I wanted my money.
