Well, no argument there, so they both suck.

My outlook on life is very simple.

Leave me and mine alone. Charity is only charity when it develops naturally. Its not charity or being "helpful to fellow man" when the money is basically stolen from my wallet then distributed.

On average every year I never see 1/3 of my pay. It just disappears into the black hole of government like it never existed. If I invested that 1/3 every year, the way compounding works, it would turn into a ridiculous snowball of money in very short order. Then that is when you see big time charity donations happen. Once I have a large excess of cash I would be more inclined to make it rain dolla bills on hobo bob.

As it stands right now, I am robbed and its given to Hobo Bob while the government attempts to keep me in bondage.

Hell I would feel better if when we paid taxes we checked the items were used for (even though much like SS, it would become a slush fund).

[X] SSD
[X] Border Security
[ ] Hobo Bob
[ ] Subsidy for people to get degree in cosmetology.

Why you calling me a hobo??

Like you I don't have a problem with taxes as long as they're going to the right place. But, it always seems like everyone has their hand in the cookie jar taking a piece for themself.

I lived through this when they stole all the money when Boston had the Big Dig project. It was "supposed to cost 2.2B and wound up at 14.6B most of it coming from our wallets! This was one of the biggest highway robberies ever built! There were trucks delivering steel and other equipment to the project and then another truck would haul it off someplace else. I could go on forever about this but basically yes we need a major infrastructure overhaul but who is going to watch over this and make sure we don't get robbed in broad daylight?

The title sounds like it could be referring to the R5G site. lol

The Money Pit: Could IT Have Prevented Budget Overruns in Boston's Big Dig?

https://www.cio.com/article/2442280/the-money-pit--could-it-have-prevented-budget-overruns-in-boston-s-big-dig-.html#:~:text=The story broke on feb. 1, 2000: the, billion. People were outraged; no one was surprised.
I think O'ahu/Honolulu Light-Rail project may beat out Boston's "Big Dig"
So far they are at 14 Billion and its only 20-mile stretch to complete.
It WAS supposed to be done last year in January 2020
NOW March 2031!!!!

So it's projecting to be a BILLION per mile...

Taxes? Come to Canada - work, buy booze and fill your tank - it’ll scare the bejeezus out of you. ?

You talk about your SS. We have two of those - one is a guarantee for anyone 65+ and it’s called Old Age Security. The other is funded by payroll contributions while you work - Canada Pension Plan (CPP) - yep, bit of a Ponzi I guess. Typically collect it at 65 but can collect at 60 with a discount. It works great untill all the boomers retire all at once. Ours is in danger of collapsing because there aren’t enough younger people filling the pipeline. Gotta have your own plan folks.
I thought the same as we always hear about the unfunded programs in the USA.
CPP is funded, it has money.
OAS is not, it is payed by our tax $ every pay.

There's no reason to work yourself to death. If you're diversified you use other investments as income until you reach the point where you take SS. Again why would anyone want the smallest payment unless you really need it to live on?
Or you set up income from the sale of your business until full retirement age.

That's sort of what I did. I sold it to one of my longtime employees and he pays me bi-weekly for 10 years. I'll still be a ways a way from full retirement age but I have savings and several other investments too. Plus after age 62 I'll keep an eye on the game (SS) if they try and change the rules I'll start taking it sooner. I think some forget you can take it anytime after 62 it's not just at 62 then you have to wait until FRA.

I took mine at 63.5 and never looked back. The amount of money difference between early SS retirement and full eligibility retirement takes many years to break even (10I've read). Check out your age 62 payment and full payment, how much do you get by not waiting and then how many years in full retirement does it take to get that amount you got from early retirement.

63.5 is when I finally got all my ducks in a row and could go. 66 would have been full retirement. Made all work by taxing and retirement savings (pre tax) to keep her income low. That way, retirement and SS net was pretty darn close to being a drone someplace ?

may not work for you, but it is working for us...so far?

I don't understand your position. Are you jeolous or scared? You haven't lived in California for 40 years. Either you're afraid our economy and/or population will just steamroll the other 49 into submission or you wish you had it so good. It's like me being mad at Canada. It's not my problem.
Scared; it isn't about Cali's abysmal economy, held up by ridiculous taxes and criminal mismanagement, or even the population that can't see what's happening - what scares sane Americans is the proliferation of California ideas showing up in other states and the federal government. California is the gold-standard on the mismanagement of resources and money; all one needs to do is look at the soaring prices in nearly every market (housing, gas, food, etc.). People are leaving in droves for redder states and, as I stated earlier, proliferating the very ideas that led them to flee Cali in the first place - it is the very definition of insanity.

This thread evolved/devolved, take your pick, into one that started from one simple point - exorbitant gas prices led by ridiculous taxes. Here we are 10 pages later nearly unanimous in saying that high prices and taxes are choking Americans.

You say "it's not my problem" if we don't live in California - but you couldn't be more wrong - it's everyone's problem. What starts on the coasts usually makes it's way to the rest of the country - California is out of hand. Until people wake up and realize we are ALL in this TOGETHER, I don't suppose things will get too much better any time soon.

WTF PA!!! What is wrong with “y’all”? I used to drive across the border to PA just to get cheaper gas ?

it’s a sad day for you when NY has cheaper gas.

And if I lived in California I would be crying now.

Live in Pa and work in NY guess where I fill up at all the time ........lol

I've looked at both, actually all 3 if you count going out to age 70. If I wait until FRA (67) I'll get $700/month more and waiting until 70 would be $1,300/month more than if I took it at age 62.

I honestly don't care about "getting my money back" I care more about outliving my money. My grandparents lived well into their 90's and both my parents are still very healthy in their mid and late 70's. Once I get to 62 and beyond I'll re-evaluate it every year along with the rest of my portfolio and of course see if the thieves (gov't) are going to change the rules as the game goes on. Health issues play a huge roll in this too so that's something to keep in mind as we never know what tomorrow will bring. :)

Do you really want to compare economies Oklahoma? Do you really want to compare industry and tech? The ebb and flow of the California population has been going on since before the Gold Rush.
This thread began as a bitch and moan about California gas taxes. It's just spiraled from there. The non-Californians seem to bitch and moan the loudest.

You won't see me complaining when Iowa raises their corn shucker labor rates. Or when Oklahoma starting upping their cow tipping fines. It's not my problem. Tip to your hearts content.
To be fair I think the reason that most non Californians complain so much is that CA tries to push everything on the rest of us. How about stay the heck out of the rest of the countries business and let us live our lives the way WE want to?

Just like you don't care about OK, we don't care about CA. You say it's not my problem in regards to OK but in return CA tries to make their problems all of ours. Yes, I get it you don't see anything wrong with your state so you won't understand my last sentence.
