Well my Ranger sprouted a nice big head of muffler hair. My wife took it to have our snow tires put on in preparation for trip to Revelstoke BC and came home with the packing blowing out the tail pipe.

Do any of you exhaust experts know if the resonator that's down stream of the muffler has any packing? Or is this 100% from the muffler itself? And with the design of the muffler (baffled, step down in diameter?) what are the chances that I will end up with a serious restriction in the exhaust if it keeps coming apart?

The dealer is weeks out like always to even look at it under warranty. Im tempted to just weld a length of 2.5in in its place for now but that will void any warranty on the exhaust. Would you risk limping it along and waiting for the dealer or cut that thing out ASAP?

Cheers

If there is any packing it would be in the resonator. The muffler has a washer that has a small opening and a flap that uses a return spring. Other than that nothing. Is it something to worry about? Unless it is.making some kind of awful noise like a Toyota Tacoma accelerating at wide open throttle from a stop then you should be fine

Thanks Frenchy. Good to know it's coming from the resonator. That makes it seem much less likely for a serious restriction. Glad I didn't jump right into removing the muffler LOL. I still might add a new magna flow down the road but I would like to retain the resonator so it seems like driving the truck for now and getting it replaced under warranty is my best bet!

Still struggling to understand how it failed internally to the point where it's blowing the glass packing out....I've had a few cheap aftermarket mufflers do this back in the day but never an OEM unit

Ford isn't exactly using the highest quality part suppliers in certain areas of these trucks.
Quite a few others have had this same thing happen.

Probably isn't going to cause any issues if you run it as is.

I wonder if you could get that considered part of the emissions system and get it warrantied?

Personally, I'd cut the factory unit out and put an aftermarket one in there.
