Yeah, I had no experience with recips , when I got out , I joined the Army National Guard and worked on Hueys. The Trail crossed the DMZ and down (and up) the trail as high as Red China,and low into Cambodia and into the Delta. We got hit on Mother’s Day, May 9th 1971 by a radar controlled quad 57 mm at Tchepone Laos through the tail and left elevator , fortunately
We landed it.
We are lucky to be here!

DAMMMMN,that left a mark. What hit you,a 37mm? Or was that from the quad 51's?

One round 57 mm AAA, HEI round, 4 rounds shot radar controlled we had music and thought it was a SAM, only one round hit us. I saw the weapon and was fired upon 3 Days before up in the “ Barrel” at the north Viet Nam Red China border, Moonlit night clear as a bell , full moon they missed and I told the pilot to get off this target, we took a heading and they fired 3 more rounds definitely radar controlled over the top and underneath , no hit, so we split down south a little and went back to work on a convoy. We landed, I was debriefed by cia, they said I was FOS, they had no such weapon. 3 days later @ Tchepone same set up and we were hit , cia confirmed radar controlled quad 57 mm AAA on tracks, capable of 256 rounds per minute. We flew too high for small arms fire. Our daily menu was 23, 37, and 57’s plus occasional strellas and sams.

Whew !!! I've gone up against rpk's/rpd's/ak's/51's/14.5's/23's/and one 37mm. That was enough.Radar shit didn't bother me because my main function out in the AO was to fly tree top level,and slow,to draw fire so the Cobra's could do their thing. Radar never seen me,but the whole rest of the world did,lol.

This was my unit back when I first got back for my second tour.Back then we were flying the 58's as scout ships for about a month or so before getting our OH-6's back in.

Lots of 57s , but radar controlled only on two occasions, we caught the big guns because we had to maintain 10 thousand ft above sea level. That’s about 2500 in the mountain areas. When the tracers change from green to red, you know those are big guns. We destroyed a couple of 85’s and 100’s plus a runway in North Viet Nam. Those bigger guns have no tracer, just a T flash and hold on to your ass and hope it don’t hit you. I loved to watch aircraft like yours run tree top, big balls, from our position we could see the gunfire and we would put the 20’s on them, our mini’s were not effective at our altitude. 20’s for personnel, and 40’s for trucks and guns. I left before they got the 105’s.

Funny how different our piece of the air war was,yet in most respects,it was the same.Seek out,and destroy. When I came back for my second tour,I came into Cam Ranh Bay I got my orders for my new unit up on the Z. They pointed out a herkybird on the ramp running up,and they were going to Phu Bai. So I jumped in and looked for a seat. The FE seen me in my nomex,my wings,and Army,so he brought me up on the flt deck. The ac was a Major,the cp was a Cpt. In about 5 minutes we were all on first name basis and laughing and joking. So they found out I was coming back on my second tour,and the ship I was going to be flying in,and they new what it was,and how we worked. What a great flt,AND,they flew me up up to Quang Tri. You Air Force dudes rocked,imho...
