Xmas even night, I heard a slight ticking sound when at around 3k RPM.
Checked the oil and other than being a touch low, it looked fine.

Topped up the oil and thought it may have been bad gas, so I filled with 94.

Noise didn't get any better. Was limping it home when, while going around a round about, the Noise got much worse.

Truck it a 23 Tremor with 31k miles.
Any thoughts?

Could be a loose spark plug. It sounds compression related on one cylinder. Can you determine where exactly the noise is coming from (under the hood)?

I think Bill, might have a good lead. It could be valve train related by the misfire . Hope I am wrong on that!

No CEL dealer appointment on Friday, but I'm without a truck until then. Will check the spark plugs and see

oh snap, sounds like a new engine for the new year :(
I dont think a piston rod would throw a CEL until it takes something else out, but it should have some vibration? or will when it goes from 4 cyl to 3
I would trailer it to the dealer ....

I haven't had a chance to look closer, but in watching the video with a metronome, seems that it's knocking at around 450ish bpm.

If it was rod know, wouldn't you hear the noise at the same rpm as idle? Seems like it is knocking at half the idle speed.

Would that correspond more so with rod or top end?

all though its more than one stroke, there is only one power stroke that would put odd pressure on the piston

Thats what I hear - Exhaust Leak by the resonance on the exhaust system and shields, a rod knock would be a deeper (note)

Listening through phone recorded audio is always different than in person but part of me hears exhaust leak, valvetrain but a knock too. It could be a BLOWN exhaust gasket or something more serious.

I just had an engine on my 2021 replaced at 50k miles. When I picked it up 7 weeks later the advisor told me they just had another Ranger come in with a knock worse than mine but they haven't troubleshot it yet. Never found out what happened.

My engine idled fine, no CEL and just came up out of nowhere one day while accelerating like normal to 45-50mph. It was about 3k RPM that I heard a knock. Then letting off the throttle with low load nothing, roll into it again with a moderate load on the engine made the noise happen again. It ended up being a toasted rod bearing in cyl 4. Cam bearings looked ok. Foreman said they never had this happen before and had to send photos to Ford. I believe him since I couldn't find anyone else on here with a bad engine, it must be rare. The 2.3L is probably one of their most reliable engines, maybe they had a bad batch of bearings or clearance issues.

I have over 1200miles on the new engine and aside from them leaving the trans mount unbolted from the crossmember, seems ok. I just dont know if it is in my head but swear I get an exhaust smell sometimes in the cab. The exhaust has some leaks I see where condensation drips, wonder if that's coming in through the cab vents behind the passenger seats. I digress.

Hope it isn't an engine but at least it will get a refurbished one. I am told they use new rotating assemblies on them. Only time a vehicle gets a NEW engine is when it is new and low miles. Good thing it was a complete long block, oil pan to valve cover BUT supposedly they do not cover plugs which I find to be BS so I paid for them.
