Load E tires might be overkill for a Ranger..
People do it.. but there are some negatives that come along with it..
Totally agree. Gvwr is what, like 6k pounds? Load e is like 12k. Sounds like the Non-LT version of the 265/70/17 would provide plenty of load rating.

I don't understand it 100% but sidewall rating, the letters, indicate the number of sidewall plys in the the tire (or an equivalent). The load index number is a numerical rating based on its load carrying capability at the fully rated pressure. So I guess that my tire's C rating is when inflated to mfg specs and the load index of 109T is the rating when inflated to 50 psi.
What gets tricky is passenger p rated tires can come in 4 ply sidewall or 6 ply side wall.
When i looked for tires.. either the falken wild peaks i bought or the Cooper discoverers i looked at had a 5 ply..

The other interesting bit. Is tire plys are no longer cotton.. they've improved over the years.. you can no get 4 ply tires that are stronger than previous generations

I looked at lots of tires.. similar to what you are doing..
Load E was eliminated right quick.. simply over kill for my needs.. now if i was towing at max capacity all the time i might go that route.. or if i went bead locks and wanted to air down to nothing..

Load c and D tires were slim pickings in the size i was looking for..

So i focused on load index and speed rating.
I went from 110T to 124T..
Speed stayed the same but load capacity increased..
Im happy with my choice.. i didnt gain a ton of rotating mass.
And i got a tire that looks good. 3 peak rated.
Isnt noisy..

3-peak is something I couldn’t figure out on the Maxxis tire. Is the tire, in the size you mentioned at the top, 3-peak snow rated?

This is the exact priorities I use when shopping for tires. I'm going to wait another year since the Bridgestones have plenty of life left. LT's are heavy, many in the mid 50 pounds, stock tire is 35. They hurt fuel economy an an performance an I don't need the advantage they offer in load an toughness.

I'm looking at 265/70/17 since they look good an fill the wheel well nicely, they're affordable an weigh under 40 pounds.

Hankook dynapro atm in 265/60r18 that i removed from truck are not 3 peak nor an LT tire.. kinda odd for an fx4 packaged truck..
My guess is the Lariat package over rode the fx4 part.

The Falken Wildpeak at3w in 265/70r18
Is 3 peak.. in fact every wildpeak at3w is 3 peak rated. It is also not an LT tire.. but i didnt have an LT to start with..

I do need to correct my previous comment as they are not 124T thats the LT version in the same size tire.
They are 116T.. which is still better than the 110T i removed

I still have the stock 265/65R17 Hankook tires on my Ranger. I will be moving up to a 265/70R17 in the future. I checked out the same Hankook tire in that size and they are SL with a 4-ply sidewall, which I thought I might be happy with because of the lighter weight and more compliant ride, but I learned that only the LT version of this tire is 3-peak snow rated. After my Hankook's great performance in the snow last month, I really want to stick with a tire that has the 3-peak snow rating. I couldn't find this information about the Maxxis. I think they are M+S and not 3-peak. Right now KO2s are at the top of my list.
One review on the tires said they are 3 peak, but I cannot remember which one. I think they were looking at ones mounted to a Dodge full size. I think that was wrong. The Aussie Ranger review I posted above mentions M&S rated, but that they do really well..

The Dynapro AT-M in 265/60/18 is what I have on my FX-4 black package, so it seems to be the choice for 18" on these Rangers from what I can see.

Not every Ranger has LT tires on it, in fact, I bet most do not. I'm not sure why some did and some didn't, I assume it was just another option.

Hankook tires on Ranger FX4 package:
LT265/65R17, 31.0" diameter, 10.6" width, -C range load, 44 lbs, 675 rev/mile
--265/60R18, 30.5" diameter, 10.6" width, SL range load, 35 lbs, 681 rev/mile

If this is right, then the tires on the 17" rims are 3-peak snow rated and the tires on the 18" rims are not. Are the specs above correct for the factory FX2/FX4 tires? Maybe that extra 9 lbs is why the MPG on my Ranger is below my expectations.
