Hi all, I bought a 2021 raptor about 3 months ago. When I first got it, while leaving my driveway there is a really loud engine or fan noise which would go away by the time I got to the end of the street. Just now it’s started doing it constantly while I drive. The higher the revs the louder the noise and it feels like I’m loosing power - really ringing its neck just to pull out of a side street. Has anyone else got the same experience? It’s so loud you are yelling at your passenger just to talk. It wouldn’t bother me if it sounded cool, but it sounds like crap and is embarrassing to be honest

Have you checked the wiring to the fan clutch to make sure it is not damaged?

Also, check for any DTC codes.

If this is constant and the clutch is not disengaging (normally) then something is keeping it engaged either via control, bad wiring (damaged) or clutch fan itself.

You nailed it! It has been at the dealership for 2 days with the mechanic looking at it and telling me there’s nothing wrong and that’s normal operating parameters (it’s Australia and bloody hot right now). I told them what you guys have said, he checked it and boom!
thanks heaps guys! ?

Yep turned out to be the fan clutch. The mechanic only decided to check it after I gave him the feedback from here! Thank you ?

I just swapped out the fan clutch with OEM and it’s still making the damned noise. A whooshing / rattle / grind noise from the fan clutch area that gets louder and more “grindy” as engine speed increases. It quiets down at idle, but still makes the weird rattle sounds, albeit less.

Frustrating…..

Could it be belt idler or tensioner pulley bearings or alternator causing the noise? If it has a grinding sound, it sounds like a bad bearing rather than the fan clutch. If it is definitely in the fan area, it might be the fan pulley bearing.
Try using a stethoscope to pin down the source of the noise.

i think I’ll let the dealer deal with it. It’s still under the drivetrain warranty and those engine components are included, except for possibly the alternator. Interestingly enough, the fan / fan clutch is not included in the 5 year / 60000 mile warranty so I replaced it myself.

Thanks for expanding my trouble shooting.

It would need to be isolated with a stethoscope while running and visually watch the (Tensioners) for excessive rocking.
Ensure the mount bolts for pulleys 3 & 11 are secure.
If still not pinpointed down, remove the belts and spin all pulleys, except crank, note any rough or noisy pulleys.

To isolate (Belt Drive System vs Internal Engine - (VCT, Timing Chain - Bearing Etc.)
With a COLD engine, remove the belts and start the engine (Few Minutes Only) did the sound remain?

I suspect one of the Tensioners or Idler Pulley is making the noise with the most likely #12
another possible is the (OAD) of the alternator clutch

NOTE: Due to the history of the 2020 and the breakage of the Tensioner (#2) off of the timing cover - in may be advisable to replace both #2 & #12, which actually highlights a spot to check as this may be a (preliminary) sign of the mounting ear of the tensioner flexing and the noise is actually from that. See Ref Pic Below

If you isolate it down to the Cooling Fan Pulley (Mount Hub) this is part of the Engine Front Cover Assembly.
I do not see a replacement for this (Pressed Fit) hub.

Inspect this mounting (ear) for any signs of stress cracks

Wow, that’s a lot of different things to look at / inspect. I’ll be leaving this at the dealer to figure out. I will say this: the fan hub shaft seems to exhibit some play as it’s spinning. I see the fan sensor support “tube” shaking around quite a bit at warm up and even as the engine settles down to idle. The large mounting nut / shaft is not spinning pin-straight; it wobbles a bit. It was doing this with the old clutch, and is now doing the same thing with the new one. I don’t think this is normal.
