I've heard that for IFS vehicles a 4" lift is the limit because the upper control arm basically touches upon the coil and going further would begin to affect the drivability of the vehicle. However, it's unclear to me if at 4" I would still get full wheel upper and lower travel and flex, or if even at 4" wheel travel begins to sacrifice? Also, if it's leveling the front of the vehicle does that still count as a lift? Additionally, for example, say a Ranger is lifted 2" from the factory because it's a trim (not true but hypothetically). Are the CVs and everything corrected for this, which means that I can get another potentially 4" of lift, or is everything left the same as an LT Colorado, for example, and the 2" just lifted for the ZR2 so that they actually do count against lifting further? Furthermore, if it's a solid axle vehicle is the sky the limit in terms of lifting the vehicle?

Sounds like you need to do a lot forum reading. MY truck is still stock as far lift/level goes. From my research ( but double check everything ). It all depends from which brand you are buying from to begin with. Old Man Emu ( i believe there max lift is 2.5" ) in order to keep, all your concerns in check. BDS has different lifts up to 6" last time I check, but they provide parts necessary for lift according to height ( to keep everything in order. I would consider changing upper control arms (if they do not come with kit, or if buying separate). Unless you are going for Long travel, then you changing a lot more items. Like I said, my Ranger is still stock height and stock wheels for now. that is something else to consider is wheel choice ( and offset ) plus what tire size are going to run.

So for most(key word) vehicles with IFS 3 inches is the max you can do before having to get major modifications done to the vehicle. I myself went with Ols Man EMU and it lifts the front by 2.4 inches and the rear by 1.6 inches. Now you might be wondering if that is enough? Well its not like you are making a trophy truck. You are simply looking for a PRACTICAL lift kit that will help you off road while still being ablt to use your truck as a truck. With OME it is definitely possible to do so. My suggestion is to go look at the threads with Old Man EMU and you will get a lot of good information.
