Are these grills truly knock-offs, or are they licensed through Ford? If these are unlicensed knock-offs, exact copies produced using an OEM grill, how is it that Ford hasn't sent a cease and desist or at least taken action to stop the boot-legging? Especially because their sales have been so public.

Is there anyone here who has such a grill installed in the European version from 2016?

Not true knock-offs of Ford’s grille and certainly not licensed but the sellers usually advertise them as DORF or as Raptor-Style, avoiding any legal woes.

I guess knock-off isn't the right term, 'counterfeit' is the word of the day.
Looks like Ford has taken action:

"Seized in the raids were thousands of counterfeit products that would be worth millions of dollars if they were genuine, Ford said in its complaint, filed on Aug. 8 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The raids “have confirmed the significant scale and brazen nature of Defendants’ unlawful and infringing conduct,” Ford said."

I like how Ford said the items would be worth millions of dollars if they were genuine. The seized items were likely only worth thousands landed because of how cheap it is to make them.

I’m curious to see what the final outcome of all this is.

It's got nothing to do with the actual cost of production, I'm sure that's nearly the same for all the players. It's the sell price that's important to Ford. The cheapest OEM Ranger grill (dealer sell price) is $250 up to $380. F150, 250, 350 grills range from more than $300 up to $1000. Selling just the cheapest Ranger grill, it would take 6,000 grills to add up to $1.5m. A combination of any of the Rangers & F-series grills could easily add up to over $1.5m with far fewer grills.

That's because Ford would be selling these same items for 4-5 x's the amount that the counterfeit ones are going for. ;)

Trust me I'm sure they're not happy with all the aftermarket vendors selling shocks and wheels etc... But as long as it doesn't have Ford (or any other manufacturer stamp on it) there's nothing they can do and those are lost profits for them. So they're just trying to keep as much as they can (which I really don't blame them) as you shouldn't be copying anyones company name for profit.

I’m really just pointing out how OEMs claim millions in damages or lost sales when it’s really a false comparison, particularly when they could never hope to sell as many OEM grilles as even the smallest of the counterfeitres will sell.

And their claims of consumers being duped or taken advantage of is pretty lame. It’s the same argument Gucci, Chanel, Rolex, and others use and it gets little public sympathy because it’s disingenuous. They are not advocating for customers who wouldn’t buy their over-priced items to begin with.

However, they have definitely been wronged. No question. They should just stick with…

It dilutes our brand, we own it, they don’t, they shouldn’t be doing it, now make them stop.

Absolutely. I think we all know that. They will also claim overhead: design & development costs; production, shipping & wearhousing; lost revenue for dealers, etc.
