Today I installed the PPE cast aluminum extended capacity transmission pan. Its a very nice high quality peice and I look forward to having the drain plug. I took my pneumatic brake bleeder and sucked out 5.75 ish quarts, then removed the stock pan. Ended up putting in a little under 8 quarts to get the dipstick back to the correct level. When i initially checked the dipstick it was at (3) when the engine was cold so i tried to fill it back to that exact spot. Also installed the B&M trans dipstick, woah are they proud of that at $200 for a couple fittings and a piece of hose. Made marks on the B&M dipstick with a knife to matchup the numbers (3), (4) and (5). I was surpised by how dark brown the ATF was after only 21k miles, so was glad to add the new fluid. I should have done the trans filter, but I didnt have one, ill install it around 40k or 50k miles.

That looks really nice. Eventually when I get around to needing a filter and fluid change definitely want to get one of these. The plastic one is just waiting for road debris to punch a hole in it.

Once the stock pan was off, I was surprised that it was thinner then I even expected it would be.

Yes I really like that one, unlike many of the aftermarket alloy ones, it doesn't hang down a lot lower than stock, just asking to cop a rock.

Why do I keep finding things to add to my "to add" list. This site just sucks the money right out of the bank.

Very nice.
If i hadn't found this forum, I would probably be $10k richer at least

The internet's the devil. If it wasn't for this site, a few firearms sites an various Harley sites I'd be paying cash for a house right now. OK maybe not paying cash but dropping the 20% or more down with no problem. When my biddies an I joke about the cash we blow on the bikes, boats, trucks an beer we just say ya can't take it with ya.

Kind of a solution looking for a problem, but it does look cool as hell.

(Meaning people “fear” plastic pan ruptures but it never or rarely happens)

True, but "plastic" just doesn't look right on a 4x4. It, unlike metal however, does get brittle with age.

What is the advantage of this?

It has a drain plug for one, it's probably stronger than plastic for two, and being alloy, maybe it has a better heat transfer rate to the air stream under the truck for three.
Some manufacturers of these also claim they help stiffen up the transmission casing as well compared to plastic or stamped metal pans, that may or may not be worthwhile or even measurable, I don't know.

The drain plug would be the biggie for me. Sure beats dumping oil from all over when trying to drop the pan for an oli and filter change.

I've seen a lot of Ford truck owners around here have to deal with oil pans rusting out, I don't recall it a problem with the trans pan but maybe they don't complain about it since you don't have to lift the or pull the engine to change the trans pan like you do to change the oil pan. The plastic pan won't have this problem but it seems it would lose strength with thousands of heat cycles on it a it gets used for years. If I off roaded a lot I'd worry about a puncture. I don't have an FX4 so I don't know if those have a skid plate protecting them. My XLT doesn't.

The aluminum on this pan is pretty thick, you could still probably crack it on the right rock tho.

we have lots of rock slides on the mountain road to work so maybe I’ll find out sooner then later how it holds up to a rock/boulder
