After I did my 50k oil change, I noticed some grease on the on the idler pulley and I decided to go ahead and replace it. Ordered Motorcraft from Rock Auto for $23.80
Decided to refer to the service manual post here on the 5G forum. Noticed I didn't have that nice little shield on my 22 that I guess you 19 boys have.(another deletion) Oh well just one less thing to take off.
Looks like it should be a 10 min. job according to the service manual, but it wasn't to be. Turns out it was more of a 2 hour job. You can tell the pulley is captured by the fan pulley, but was hoping the retaining bolt would slide by the fan pulley then slide the idler out the side. That wasn't the case the captured washer on the retaining bolt caused many not so nice words.
The service manual doesn't give any hint that I was going have to take the fan nut loose to slide the fan pulley forward enough to free the idler pulley. Maybe there is some trick I didn't see to get the pulley free, but that is what I ended up doing.
New pulley installed
Old pulley
You can see the back side of the bearing the seal is leaking and covered in grease. The bearing still feels pretty good and could have a year or two of life left in it. But why wait its only a 10 min repair right
Here you can see the captured washer that gave me all my grief.
Well its done and one less thing to worry about.
The one thing I'm glad about is that we don't have one those stretch belts on the Ranger. The job wasn't really all that bad, just wish I had better info going into it.
