My personal experience with Plastic Vs Metal jerry cans over the years has been that plastic ones are surprisingly strong, but eventually develop a split somewhere after 20 years or so of use. Metal ones never split but eventually rust. Kind of even. I can't say for certain, but I'm pretty sure that neither are bulletproof.
