Hi. This past week, drove my 2019 Ranger (approximately 39K miles) across the state. It was almost all freeway driving at about 75. In stopping at a wayside after about 2 hours and shutting down the truck we got a heavy gasoline odor. This happened for the rest of the 4 hr trip whenever shutdown. It occurred on the way back today. This is new and never experienced before. Sometimes it would also smell a hot exhaust sort of smell, but predominantly gasoline. Only other time I’ve smelt that with vehicles is when there was a leak. Nothing at start up or when approaching to go for a drive, and no stains drips on floor. Have any other Ranger owners experienced this? Any ideas? Catalytic Converter? Thanks Larry

Check your engine oil level and see if it is overfull. If it is overfull, does is smell like gasoline badly?

Road trips boil the gas out of the oil that accumulates in turbo direct injection (GTDI) engines. This is completely normal. You smell it because it circulates out of the crank case into the intake through the PCV line, when you shut the engine down the gas vapor seeps out of the air filter into the ambient air like a fart. Hope you had a good trip ?

Check oil. As soon as you pop the hood you will smell it. I’ve taken multiple roadtrips and it has ever burned off the gas.

Thanks for all the reply’s so far. I had never closely followed the “gasoline in oil” thread as my oil volume never seemed to be increasing. I checked the oil. Not above full right at full. Hadn’t checked it after last change so can’t comment accurately on volume. It did have a faint gasoline smell, but surely was not obvious or overpowering. As far as the “they all do that…” comment. I’ve never noticed before this trip, and the truck has 38k on the clock? Is this 2.3 liter issue, a design issue, a year issue, a manufacturing issue? Has it been resolved? Not sure this gets to my issue, but does make me think twice about thoughts of getting a Bronco!

The fuel smell in oil is pretty much in all direct injected engines.
Where do you smell the odor from? Are you able to pinpoint it to a general location?

Fuel pump(which is on the top and rear of the engine), fuel door/gas tank, ect.

Everything on these trucks is basically a quick-connect fitting with allows for all kinds of possible trouble spots.

Thanks. I didn’t mention the location. We are smelling it from inside when we slow to a stop. When we pulled into a wayside we thought it must be coming from a vehicle we parked next to. Turned out to be us. Same thing when we stopped at our destination. Same reaction on return. After we got to destination I did pop the hood, it was noticeable in engine compartment but maybe not quite as bad as the smell in the cab. This is something we had not experienced until this trip 4 hrs on freeway on Monday and return on Thursday. Wanted to get some thoughts from this site before scheduling a visit to the dealership.

I'd check around the fuel pump, which is on top of the engine by the firewall.

Check the fittings and hoses, around the mount bracket and the little foam insulator. A little inspection mirror would be great here. Dealer techs should be able to pressurize the system and check for leaks easily.

I personally get an occasional coolant odor after some trips, I suspect the easy connect fitting to the expansion tank but no fluid loss to be found. No fluid, no residue... Just an odor.

I'll also occasionally get a burning plastic/rubber smell that some others experienced.

Look around to see if any critters have chewed on anything under the truck. Evap system leaks have been sources of fuel odor I have found in other vehicles in the past. They usually set a check engine light code though.

Keep us posted, I'm curious what the problem is.
Yes, keep us posted. I have taken many multiple hour long highway trips with my 2019 Ranger, even day long trips towing my TT, and have never had a noticeable fuel smell in my cab or elsewhere. And, I park in garage at home.

Of all the times I've changed and recycled my oil, I've never got a hint of gasoline smell...not with my DI Chevy 2.0 turbo either...

I've had opposite with other vehicles. That said, with the exception in cold weather I don't get much fuel smell in my oil. Not that I spend much time smelling used oil cause you know, it's toxic as hell lol.

Just seems to be highly random.

Are we sure it's not simply a fuel leak and not the dreaded gas in oil syndrome?
