After looking over all the options, I decided to get it rebuilt by a well known highly reviewed local shop. They were very familiar with the 10r80 issues and assured me they use all the ford oem updated parts. They told me it would be close to two weeks before I get it back and they were done a couple days earlier.

He showed me my "trash can", ? Inside there are two ridges going around the inner diameter. One of the ridges had a groove cut into it. The ridge closer to the opening looked fine. One of my friction plates had a chunk missing.

I've been driving it now for 2 days. Honestly it feels the same before it went bye bye. I never had any issues out of my transmission till I did. It had a few weird hiccups but overall it always shifted fine. It felt it's best when I added Lubegard Platinum. I've thought about adding it to my new rebuild but if something were to happen, I would be worried the shop could decline any repairs under their warranty.

It’s questionable, yes. When I had a new five speed put in my dually, the place that supplied it said USE ONLY THIS TYPE OIL and the use of anything else or additive will INSTANTANEOUSLY VOID your warranty. They also told the installation guy to fill the new transmission up to the plug level, then take the top off and pour in two more quarts. So he did exactly that and never had another problem With it.
i am starting to research a quality rebuild shop in my area cause at 149,000 absolutely trouble free miles on this Ranger, I feel it is only a matter of time. And I’m not sure I trust my dealership to do it correctly.

Do you have a list of what they replaced? Wondering about the valve body. Did it get replaced or “cleaned “?

My transmission was rebuilt by Ford around 3k miles ago.

Overall it shifts better, but I still get the occasional "I Have No Clue What I'm Doing" shifts.

The invoice has it listed as...
transmisson/valve body rebuild
Transmission fluid motorcraft ulv
tcm reflash

I didn't think to ask if the valve body was going to be replaced or cleaned up. He just said everything will be replaced with the updated parts and a new torque converter.

Uugh.. Idk if I even want to ask if he replaced it..lol..i feel this is an ignorance is bliss situation.

Well you had me go outside in the cold for us southerners weather and roll around on cold concrete to go take a look.

This wasn't the label that was on my truck before the rebuild. So I would say the valve body was replaced. Though nothing on the label says "ford". So I'm assuming it's not oem.

The trans case is also black. Idk if that's a different case or they painted my original one. The tag that's on the other side, with build date, is the same as the one before the rebuild.

The label denotes which software program is in the transmission. Has no bearing on whether your valve body is new or rebuilt. The valve body is internal so no way to look at it from the outside to determine. That label is on every 10R80 and most likely is the original. Can you post a copy of your repair order that lists/describes what they did?

I got mine back two days ago and it's shifting fine. Even when new the truck would occasionally shift weird. The 10R80 isn't the smoothest shifting unit anyway so there's that.Mine was worse when it was below about 40 degrees so this morning it was 28 here so I took it out to see what it would do. Shifts well from first to second which where it was the worst and all through all the other shifts were good. I'm gonna call it good until it isn't. Overall I really do like this truck so it stays for now

What I typed out in my other post is exactly what the invoice says.

I took pictures of my transmission before it went to them. That sticker wasn't on there. This is the one that was on there and the other side still has the same sticker with the build date.

So if they rebuilt the valve body then it would come with a new strategy #?

I do not think they will ever know if you use Lubegard Platinum in the transmission.

I know that it is staying in my transmission. Warranty or not!

I'm convinced it is worthwhile.

I think the valve body is where the trouble begins. One slightly sticking solenoid and things go crazy. I could actually hear the solenoids in my transmission open and close at low speeds in cold weather! And when the transmission was operating with fluid temps at 200F.

At 150F - 165F fluid temps, the transmission is quiet, and shifts smooth as silk!

I'm not saying that the CDF drum isn't a problem (it is), or that the outer can isn't an issue as well, but the valve body as designed with the present Ford parts, will fail again, it is simply a matter of time. And when it fails, the clutches burn and began to disintegrate, and all those particulates end up around those solenoids, causing them to wear and stick.

It is down hill from there!

LubeGard Platinum will protect those solenoids, keeping them from sticking in the first place.

Does your other sticker also have the 21245 on it? If so then that’s the build date. And then this sticker is original information from when it was originally built. Or a reprint of it. Hard to say what they did if that’s all the info they gave you. So you have no idea what parts were put into it?

I’m sitting at just over 149,000 and getting worried.

I wouldn’t add anything unless they told you to. For a brand new rebuilt transmission, I wouldn’t think you should have to add any fluids or additives. They’re designed to run on a specific type of oil without needing anything extra. I’ve heard the shifting can be a little stiff for the first couple hundred miles after a rebuild.

If you’re in doubt, call and talk to them about it. Tell them that it’s shifting the same as before and there’s no noticeable difference since the rebuild was done. Better yet, email them so it’s in writing.

As far as adding anything, I definitely wouldn’t. I assume that would absolutely void their warranty, then you’re SOL if something does happen.

When we spoke he said it would be a full rebuild with all updated parts. I do remember asking him will he be able to mate the new valve body to the tcm or will that be outsourced. He replied it will all be done at his shop.

These two stickers were on my truck before the rebuild. The one with build date/transmission part# is still on my truck. The one with the valve body code# is no longer there and that other sticker is now on the transmission. The code numbers from each sticker do not match.

If I get a chance, I'll give him a call next week and ask if it was changed.
