Hey folks, need your opinion on this rust going on. I've talked to Gibson and they say that this is typical and not a warranty issue. They then begin to tell me about the properties of stainless steel and again how this is normal. This does not look good to me after only 18 months of ownership, and the fact that my truck is kept in a garage. Their tech support doesn't seem at all helpful, and this isn't the quality they are claiming. What are your guys' thoughts?

Hi Ct,

I am not a materials guy, but looks pretty normal for 304 stainless steel. Particularly is there is use of road salt. 304 Stainless will rust, which is probably a confuser for you. No idea of the thickness of the pipes and Moofler, but I do not think you are in any danger of a rust through condition...JMO.

The downpipe doesn't look at all like that all.

I do live in Utah, but our past 2 winters here have been weak, thus not much road salt going down. My truck is also garage kept. To me that seems like a lot of rust after just 18 months. Figured Id ask you guys as you will tell me the truth, rather than just the tech support folk.

For the tips:

1) Apply soap and water in a vigorous circular motion
2) Apply Mothers

I’m not impressed. If Ford can use corrosion resistant materials they should be able to.

According to their tech folk, the tips are 304 polished stainless, and the tubes are 16 GA 409.

In regard to the 409 tubes, the folks at Summit Racing seem to be in agreement with Gibson:

409 stainless steel can be almost 90% iron. This means a magnet will stick to it. It will also develop surface rust over time, especially after being exposed to heat.
And in regard to the tips... got any nitric acid handy?

304 will rust very fast in hot humid climates

I just happen to work with all types of Stainless Steel for my work. They’re not all the same as far as corrosion go. Out of all of them 304 is the worst of lot. 304L is a little better (purer) Reason being it has more impurities than others. It’s the carbon and iron content that does this.

On my former Ranger factory stainless exhaust lasted 17 years before I got a muffler hole. Went with the Gibson stainless and it was still on the truck when I traded it in. Total ownership was 23 years and 287K in New England weather! The frame rotted out before the exhaust.

Now one thing is important here. All hardware used must be stainless as well. Otherwise it will make the stainless act like normal steel and rust like crazy.
