I'll second that. I hit 25.7 mpg coming down from Sacramento into the grapevine.

Going over the Grapevine sucks up the gas but then you get to coast downhill at 80 mph into the LA smog which makes up for it.

Taking the Ranger on a road trip with the Family from Vancouver to Anaheim (Disneyland lol). Getting my first service done with Ford before the trip on Tuesday (leave Wednesday). I'm super excited to take my new truck on a proper road trip.

Any Tips on Getting better fuel economy or what to prep?

Tire pressure tire pressure tire pressure, also alignment is important but I would check it only if you have not had it looked at or have a reason to suspect so use your best judgement. Also make sure you top off wiper fluid people miss that a lot myself included rangers like 65 and beyond that the mpg drops somewhat quickly as you go fast so for a middle ground staying right around the low 70's will be good. Be safe and have fun! Also compare and contrast the customs and border ppl for getting into the us vs back into canada its very amusing even as an american when we were going into canada they were way more chill and a lot nicer than the us customs guys when we drove back also the us guys have a ton more sensors and cameras and stuff like that

I will never forget the first time I pulled into a station in Oregon. It was in one of those tiny towns between Ashland and Medford (maybe called Phoenix?). I jumped out and started pumping and this guy comes running out of the office, screaming, “stop! You can’t do that!”, you would have thought I was filling a milk bottle with gasoline with a piece of rag hanging out. Needless to say, I was a little annoyed, until he explained the law in Oregon.

When we decided we needed to get out of San Francisco, my wife was really interested in Oregon, because they pumped your gas.

First trip to the Oregon coast for camping we were towing out travel trailer with a Ram 2500 diesel. Oddly enough, you cannot pump your own gas but it's okay to pump your own diesel. We leave in a couple weeks for there again so now I'm in a gas rig so I guess they will pump my gas. I thought I had heard that law was going away.

that law is so dumb tbh needlessly increases costs and makes things more difficult and slow its not like you are fueling up a fighter jet its just a car, heck as a pilot the majority of the time I still refuel my own aircraft even if the fbo offers drive up its cheaper faster and easier

Absolutely, I have a buddy who dead sticked his 310 in after a kid pumped Jet A into his tanks.

Happened to bob hoover as well I remember reading about it in his book and him talking about it when I was lucky enough to meet him, the kid was beating himself up and felt awful so when he was departing again he made sure that it was the same one who filled his bird up when he finally left in an effort to get his confidence back and make him feel a little better. The best part is aviation fuel is colored and has distinct smells not to mention the myriad of labels and warning stickers so how one could mix them up and not realize I don't know

This guy was in the Bob Hoover age cohort, although he was younger than Hoover. He was one cool customer, had flown century series fighters in the AF, did a ton of missions in Super Sabers early in the war. I forget who I was talking to about the episode, but they were like number 2 for take-off and talking on tower freq when the mayday came in. They said my buddy's voice was like he was sitting on his living room couch talking to a friend sharing a beer. Different breed those guys.

I remember learning a neat trick about avgas from a friend who lived down in Texas. He had been a 747 Captain with Braniff. He had the distinction of being the last PIC for any Braniff flight. He was sitting on the tarmac waiting for his take-off clearance when the company came on the radio and said to taxi back, the company was shuttered. He said he had a plane load of very unhappy customers as they deplaned. He said a lot of them were screaming at him. Nutty stuff.

One day we were pre-flighting his Bonanza and he asked me to sample the fuel. I can't remember if it was 100LL or 100 (Blue or Green), but whatever color it was I was looking at it and said, no problems (I was looking mainly for water). He pulled the cup out of my hands and poured some on his finger. He said, "if it is still oily after it has evaporated, you got some kerosene in it." Great little tip.

Tire pressure is the biggest, make sure it's to your door specs. Since you're getting it serviced they should do the usual like inspect the hoses, fluid levels, tires, brakes and filters too. Before leaving on our trip last month I asked my shop to go through everything and make a trip inspection. Have a great trip!!

The best advice right there. Even though it's basically a new truck you want it ready to go. I do this before each trip for my peace of mind. Also from one that has been on many road trips. Don't sweat the little stuff like gas mileage. Even though gas is at a premium the main thing your going on the trip is to have fun, and enjoy the time with the family. Be safe, and enjoy your adventure.

Yeah I have only had a couple close calls thankfully never had to call mayday *knock on wood* one time I was on a date with a knockout brunette who I was trying to impress and we had a huge gust hit us when we were doing a crosswind landing and had just touched the port wheel and were doing the transition to all 3 on the ground and it nearly flipped us, I managed to keep us up and we skidded a ways before I got us down, the tower called down and made sure we were good and I was just like yeah that was a heck of a gust, I am gonna pull off to the ramp and double check the tires but we are good to go can you pass us off to ground? according to her my face never even changed and I just reacted instantly, that bought me more points than the sunset flight over the coast ever could lol and that was how I joined a very exclusive club on the way back lol. That freak instance of terrible timing was the best wingman ever

That kerosene tip is really great to know Imma remember that, thanks. I like to think I have some of the cool calmness as those guys but they are a different level especially the navy guys landing on carriers like its nothing, good god

I didn't know that about the Diesel. I forget where I read it but somebody posted that Oregon was going to phase out Diesel (or at least there was some faction of the state legislature that was proposing it). I was thinking about all those truck stops along I-5 and thinking, "I wonder if they actually counted votes about that idea, before going public with it... rut, roh"

I think if you fly long enough, the stories kind of pile up. Looking back on it, I probably shouldn't be laying here typing away. The irony is, from all my close scrapes (and I had a couple REALLY close ones, both totally my fault), when we are talking with friends, my wife will say, "I hate to fly, Bill is the only pilot I feel comfortable flying with, because he is such a safe pilot... " I never say a damn thing, I just change the subject.

Yeah you are 100 percent on that one and hey as we say any landing you walk away from is good any one that you can fly the plane after is great, you are still here despite the odds so your wife is probably dead on. We are always most critical of ourselves and the ones who are the hardest on themselves usually live the longest cause of it lol so count it as a positive, it means you are a safer pilot cause you are aware and you don't give yourself any slack to get complacent or cocky

That's good you're able to do so much in just a short time but I'd be careful on them stairs. Was your wife helping you or are you just holding onto the sides on the way down?
