I got my ranger back in June, it is a used 2022 with the 2.3 and FX4 supercab.
I originally "upgraded" to the K&N drop in filter, and was going to eventually get the tune.
I have the Ford Gold Warranty, so haven't found a ton of information on the tune + Gold
I called the local dealership, and they said they will only do the install if I bought the tuner from them, and with the cost of the tuner through a dealer, I put the project on the back burner.

Well this week I was able to get an open item, never used tuner with the code still in the box for $250, so now I am back into seeing what I should do.

I understand this is a pretty safe tune, but is it a bad idea to just install it myself? The moment I get it, I would like to at least change the tire size in the system. Should I really find a dealer / SAE tech that is willing to write up that they did it, I was looking at previous threads here, and lots people said they charged more then what I just paid for the tuner to have this done.

I didnt get the tuner through Ford Directly, so is the warranty option already out the window?

Also I never found a good answer, lets say the last owner did the flash but didnt keep the tuner with the truck, how would I know if the tune is there or not already?

Thank you

I installed the tune myself over 5 years ago. No issues at all since. I did toss the K&N mess for a Roush intake shortly after.
I thought about the Roush, I was eyeing that, I also have the afe filter but not the kit. I got it for free, but I am not sure if I can even go that way easily.
At the moment its the K&N drop in filter, Velossa Big Mounth, Afe magnum force scope intake.
But I might want to eventually swap them all to the Roush since that was my first idea.

I have all those bits, and the Roush. Easy to clean and generally a solid setup.

Ok sweet, just checking, was there a way to tell if the tune has been installed? Does it change the splash screen, or anything like that?

I also have the Roush - you want to leave the Velossa Tech and the aFe scoop in place. The Roush does not have an air scoop - the only part of the air box it replaces is the lid.

not that I know, but you should use premium gas with the FPT or it might not operate as well.

I have used premium since I bought the truck. I was used to getting it with the other cars I had.

My understanding on the FPT is that it must be installed by an ASE certified mechanic for the warranty to remain in effect.

That doesn't mean it must be a Ford dealer, just ASE certified.

Also, the FPT warranty is 3/36 from NEW, not from when you bought the tuner.

Since your truck is a 2022 and therefore outside the FPT 3/36 anyway, that part of the warranty is a non-issue so just install it yourself.

You would have to talk to your dealer about how the tuner plays along with things covered by your Gold warranty.

My 22 is still under the 3/36 warranty because I bought a left over. You may be past that. I have a friend that is an ASE mechanic and "he did it for free". Ask around, there are ASE mechanics that will do it for $100 or even a case of beer. Not sure how the Ford Gold Warranty works. Is there a number you can call for that? Better yet, email so you have it in writing.

From the website:
Comes with Ford Performance 3yr/36k mile warranty from new vehicle in-service when installed by a Ford dealer or ASE/Red Seal certified technician

Note: I bought mine at the time I bought the Ranger in 2019 and had the dealer install as part of delivery prep. I also got the extended warranty.

Clarity of exactly what the "warranty" is needed, IMO. I read this as, from when the truck was first delivered to original owner, there is a 3YW... but the truck came with a 3YW, so this is just not voiding the truck warranty. Or is it a separate warranty on the software itself??

The OP has a used '22 (so very close to "times up" on the factory warranty)... if any is left, is it transferable to the new owner??

At this point, just self installing would seem to be the way to go. (cheaper)

I have one on the way, I will be installing it myself. It is so easy and honestly, I rather not have someone else do the steps required since you need your own account to upload the OEM tune.

IIRC it's the same (or close to) the Livernois tune procedure which is super easy to instal. I did mine in my friends driveway (I needed his Windows laptop)when it was 110 outside. lol

Mine's a '22 SuperCab with FX4 also. Only thing I screwed up during install was registration. I think you were supposed to register on Ford Performance website first. I think I registered on ProCal tool first & it voided the voucher code. I had to get help from Ford Performance to reissue replacement code & do it over.
