I was running a 970 Pro which is a Gen 3 PCIe SSD and it was pretty fast.

And now the Gen 4 PCIe 980 Pro. Pretty much double across the board. Everything launches incredible fast now.

Worth it.

Now I get to gut my 2019 iMac and replace the Fusion drive with the 970 Pro

I put 2TB of Micron SSD in my notebook. Then I got a USB stick I could put the one I took out as a storage drive. It was an open box on EBay from Newegg for something like 80 bucks. Big difference!

I'm still happy with my 970 EVO Plus drives:

Don't get a Gen 4 unless your mobo supports it.

So I just launched No Man's Sky on the new SSD.

Big improvement in loading speed.

For those not familiar, No Man's Sky is a BIG space simulation and the opening galaxy fly through sequence would "stutter" occasionally before initializing your game.

Much smoother now. The kicker is that even with all the below hardware, the No Man's Sky opening will still run smoother on a console

This is on my VM/Gaming/Hobby computer.

For the nerds:

Ryzen 3900X CPU (12 core/24 thread)
64GB DDR4 RAM 3200
MSI X570 mobo with dual PCIe NVME slots (1 Gen 4.0 and 1 Gen 3.0 slot)
Gigabyte RTX 2070 8GB video card
Samsung 980 Pro gen 4 PCIe 1 TB (boot, favorite games, favorite VM) 7GBs
Intel 660P Gen 3 PCIe 2TB (other games, 2nd favorite VMs) 2GBs
2x Seagate 7200rpm HDD 4TB each (everything else) turtles

I built this a couple of years ago and it's still a workhorse. Its primary job is virtual machines.

I can run a full VM domain (PDC, SQL server, mail server, workstation) with no issues.

I've thought about upgrading to an AM5 CPU/mobo combo but haven't seen the need yet.

And yet, my Mac Mini is still a snappier daily driver ?

I won a 5800X3D and gave it to my son, he replaced the 3700X in his box (B550/16GB/RTX 3060/Gen3 M.2 NVMe). I would have put that in one of my boxes.... but it was a downgrade for either of the boxes with a chipset that supports it.

My Primary box is currently a 5950X/Asus Crosshair 8 Hero (X570)/64GB ram/RTX 3090 FE/pair of 2T Gen3 m.2 NVMe drives. My stream box is 3950X/B550 MSI Carbon Gaming/16GB ram/RTX 3060. My old computer these replaced (kinda, that box is still serving as network storage) is FX-8350/Asus Sabertooth 990FX (HW Rev 1)/32GB/pair of HD7970s/512GB SSD/1TB SSD (for VMs)/BD-burner/3x 6TB WD Reds in Raid-5 (12TB logical drive). That old box mined enough in the winter on that HD7970s to pay for itself and the new primary system.

I run my work VMs on the primary system. Though I did just buy an older HP DL360 G7 with a pair of X5650 Xeon processors in it and 8 15k rpm 146GB drives. Moving my son's MC server to a VM on there from the free laptop that has been running it. Looking into creating an iSCSI target on the old FX8350 box for the server to map too so it can make use of the 12TB logical drive, though I'm thinking of getting a dedicated NAS and selling off the old FX8350, but I really love that Thermaltake Level 10 GT case and would regret letting that go.... Loved that case so much the new primary is in the Level 20 GT case.
