Technically speaking, the actual cause of the initial fire on the Fremantle Highway is yet undetermined. It’s nevertheless clear from numerous incidents that lithium-ion battery fires are an ongoing problem both for people and for the transition to EVs. While it’s plausible that some sort of damage occurred to cause this fire, the optics look horrible for EVs in general.

This is just the reality of what can happen and has happened. Go to sleep and have your EV catch your house on fire while you and your family are in the house.

I'll have to dig out the article I just read where Toyota is working on new solid-state EV battery tech. They're supposed to reduce EV fire risk. ?

It's almost funny.....salt water conducts electricity exceptionally well, and they're pumping it all over the electric vehicles, trying to put out the fire, while encouraging them to ignite..... ?

About 4.25 tons of lithium alone then miscellaneous other metals.

All moot if the ship sinks. Then all kinds of materials sitting on the ocean floor.

OK, so I was off by several lbs....my bad.
All moot as however many and whatever type (lets not forget the other 3300 vehicle batteries) there all going to end up in the food cycle in one way or another.
Just remember this next time you eat a shrimp basket at Popeye's.

Addendum....just read the ship's fire is out and appears they're going to tow it.
Be on the look-out for cheap VW's, Mercedes EV's that may come on the market at a dealer near you...

A totally miniscule amount of pollution in what has been dumped in the ocean for centuries and for that matter dumped on a daily basis, including waste from the thousands of cruise ships plying the oceans, yes not good but literally a drop in an enormous bucket. But good fodder for the anti ev folks.

Initially, it was understood that there were only 25 EVs on the ship, but Automotive News Europe reports that there were actually 498 EVs on the stricken ship.

Although the cause of the blaze was initially unknown, RTL, a Dutch broadcaster, released a transcript from an emergency responder that said, "The fire started in the battery of an electric car."

In an official statement from K Line, the carrier's operator, there were said to be 3,784 cars on board in total - including multiple BMW and Mercedes-Benz models - also much higher than the number presumed initially. This is still far below the 6,000-car capacity of the vessel.
