Hello,

recently moved to NC from FL, I live in one of the 19 counties still requiring emissions testing; but i was wondering if i would pass NC emissions testing with the Ford Performance Tune installed or would i be better off returning to stock a few weeks before hand and letting all the sensors get to a ready state again.

Also i got the CARB sticker with the tuner, where do you place it on the vehicle? i read it had to be placed on the PCM module, but also read it could be placed underside of the hood.

Thanks in Advance

If you got the Ford Performance tune, it's CARB certified and won't mess with emissions. Other mods might, but the tune/etc won't on its own. The CARB sticker can just be placed under the hood AIUI.

As long as O2 sensors and CAT are running normally, it shouldn't matter...the test doesn't involve a dyno run...just checks your sensors and visual check of your equipments...it has no idea that you're running 1,000 hp...

The first 3 yrs or less than 70k miles should be a visual Safety Inspection only and not the Emissions Testing.

Oh great...they waited till my truck is 4 years old and over 100k miles...yay...

On the bright side, my MIINI is now over 20 years old so I can run open exhaust...

No, you can't. NC has a law about mods that make the exhaust louder than stock or cause unusual noise. I've been ticketed for that with my RS because of the pops because the police officer assumed it was a tune that allowed my car to do that. Was dismissed at court since I showed documentation from Ford that "pops and burbles" are part of the RS signature sound and a factory feature.

Also, if your Mini has a cat on it, it's still a violation of Federal law to remove/bypass it, or any other factory emission systems.

This is how it should be, but here in New Hampshire Kate and I both had to get inspections even though both cars had their initial one at purchase time and were less than a year old. Here it's done on your birthday - so Live Free and Die Broke!

No more than 90 days before the plate/registration expire.

Smog check in NC is a Fkn joke; just plug a scanner into the OBDII port and makes sure it passes I/M monitors and no DTCs preset ? also the amount of exemptions and the fact its only required in 19 counties why bother. Took the escape in to get smogged and inspected for renewal. $30 later that was basically it

When every thing is working correctly that is how it should be. Now, if there is a part of the system failing that has not been addressed, it's not so smooth a process.

It is nothing more than a money grab by the oil change shops. I had a state trooper friend fail when they told him that his serpentine fan belt needed to be replaced. The old belt was fine. I actually saw it. That is a big reach.

I had a oil change shop remove my tires to check the brake pads (completely unnecessary as they could see the disc pad, but they wanted the brake pad replacement work), then stripped a lug stud when they cross threaded the lug nut using an impact wrench.

I had another leave a 6" oil stain in the drivers seat. They offered me a free oil change in return. How about paying to replace the seat cover!

I have learned to be first in line in the morning to keep the craziness to a minimum, as those teenagers have not hit the grease and oil yet.

I wish they simply collected the money and left my car alone.
